'Embryo' is infantile science fiction

Embryo is claptrap, but conceding that the plot and premise are nonsense, it can be entertaining if you have a strong stomach. Rock Hudson is a doctor who has discovered a formula that makes things — like puppy and people embryos — grow much faster than their normal rate. He tries it first on a Doberman Pinscher, who comes out healthy though mean, and then a girl, who comes out healthy, smart, gorgeous and mean. Barbara Carrera, as the girl Victoria, is really lovely, but she and Hudson are saddled with a plot that would make even the Barrymores look shoddy ... and they ain't the Barrymores. This is no movie for the squeamish. Little fetuses float in aquariums suspended amidst ropes of medical tubing. Hudson keeps saying anti-abortion slogans like "it's alive and that makes it beautiful" about an undeveloped four-week old embryo obviously constructed of silly putty. Not that I am suggesting by any means that the film should have used the real thing, heaven forbid, but it does lend an air of idiocy to the entire proceedings. Towards the end of the film, where things get gory anyway, one rubbery embryonic form bounces across the floor when its aquarium-incubator gets broken. That's a little hard on the old gag reflex. Then the test-tube born girl, now a brilliant 25-year-old scholar (and really about age two) tries a little amateur surgery and leaves dead bodies all over Dr. Hudson's pristine lab. In the scenes that stay away from the sci-fi and gore, there is some entertainment. Victoria has a moment with Roddy McDowall, in a cameo role as a chess champion, that is a pure pleasure. And Diane Ladd, as Hudson's sister-in-law, puts in a professional job apparently unfazed by the garbage around her. If you're a Rock Hudson fan, you might make it through Embryo mildly intrigued, but you'll probably have a better time with McMillian and Wife reruns. And you can skip Embryo without a worry about missing Barbara Carrera. She's really gorgeous and, hopefully, will turn up again soon. — in a better movie. — ERICA MEYER Rock Hudson portrays scientist

Bilbao's touches of class make dining out a pleasure

Bilbao, 5910 SW Eighth St., 266-2010. Hours: noon to 12 p.m. daily. Valet parking. When the soup arrived, we were only half way through our cigarettes, so the waiter inverted clean saucers over the soup bowls to keep the broth hot. A nice touch. Actually, the Bilbao, at 5910 SW Eighth St., has a lot of those small, classy touches that make the restaurant a pleasure. For example, during the meal our basket of hot rolls was replaced with a basket of fresh, hotter rolls. And plump Cuban crackers, also warm, were in the basket. And when I asked for a "doggy bag" to take the remainder of my delicious sea food mariscada home with me, the waiter brought the savory combination of fish, crab, clam and shrimp back in a foil pan with a close fitting cardboard top, neatly wrapped in a white paper bag. Our water glasses were refilled and our ashtray replaced several times during dinner and the food was as good as the service. The stone crab ajillo ($7.95) features three stone crab claws and a plate full of crab meat sauteed in a light garlic sauce. The Sea Food a La Bilbaine (mariscada) was equally deiectabele and featured a tomato sauce with hints of onion and garlic. There's a full listing of sea food dishes, featuring lobster, shrimp, red snapper and stone cram in various combinations — each available with garlic sauce, vinaigrette, enchiladoes or green sauce. The house specialities range from picadillo ($4.50) to veal brains al la romaine ($3.75). There are several omelets listed and several rice dishes as well as grilled jumbo shrimp ($6.50), lamb shank carrousel (5.95) and marinated kingfish ($3.75). A small but well selected wine list is offered and desserts include flan and coco rayado (coconut pudding) at $1 each. The cuisine and service are matched by the decor and the ambience. The only jarring note is the flowers on the table and the ferns against the wall — they're plastic, and the restaurant merits fresh bouquets. — ERICA MEYER place settings . . . south dade, coral gables
