Village of Kendale garners garden awards
The Council of Garden Club Presidents of Dade County last week presented 18 awards to citizens and organizations - most of them in South Dade - for their efforts to beautify and improve the environment. Receiving Citizen Appreciation Awards were Joe Gross of Shaw Nursery and Leslie Gross, president of the Village of Kendale Homeowners Association. Shaw was cited for his work in coordinating the telephone system for reporting plant thefts, while Gross was recognized as the person responsible for the planting of flowering trees at the Killian Parkway overpass and the Palmetto Expressway Extension. A variety of establishments - from a government agency to a gas station - received the council's beautification awards. Volkswagon South, 16565 S. Dixie Hwy., received an award for its well-groomed grounds at the agency as well as maintaining the median strip and railroad right of way opposite the agency property. General Waterworks received an award for the landscaping of its lift station at the Village of Kendale and for encouraging homeowners in their landscaping project. For excellent landscaping and maintenance of grounds, West Miami City Hall, 901 SW 62nd S Ave., received a beautification award, as did the Merchants Bank at 66th Avenue and SW Eighth Street for its attractive landscaping and well-maintained lighting at night. The Professional Building on Caribbean Boulevard in Cutler Ridge was cited for its excellent landscaping and maintenance of the building and surrounding parking area. South Miami residents might recall that the location of the Pan American Bank on Red Road and San Remo was once a hamburger restaurant. The bank received a beautification award for "clever and attractive renovation of a hamburger restaurant into a most beautifully landscaped bank and parking area." Shell Oil Station at LeJeune Road and SW 36th Street is proof that gas stations can be beautiful and for its beautifully landscaped grounds the business received an award. The annual $100 Donnelly Advertising Award and trophy for the best project submitted by a local garden club for community landscaping was given to the Village of Kendale Garden Club for its beautification of the median strip on SW 107th Avenue between N. Kendall Drive and SW 104th Street. Other local clubs receiving awards were the South Miami Garden Club for conducting weekly "therapy type" programs for children with mental and physical handicaps at Tropical Elementary School, and the Landscape Garden Club for a two-year project of landscaping at the Parkway Childrens' Home.
