City and employes will 'talk turkey'

A hearing, continued from May 6, on charges that the City of South Miami dealt unfairly with a union representing some 40 city workers, will be held on Friday, June 4, at the state office building in downtown Miami. According to City Attorney Edward Moore, who is representing the city in the legalities, this hearing will take up an amended complaint against the city of the union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employes. The city and the union negotiated for more than a year on a contract which the city's council failed to agree upon. At one point, a master was called in to serve as an arbitrator. The council accepted some but disagreed with some of the master's recommendations. One of the points brought up by the union were charges that the city council donated turkeys to its 150 employes at Christmas at a cost of $900 after it had told the union that the city didn't have funds enough for the percentage of raise that the union was seeking. In addition, the turkey donation was not a part of the contract. The hearings, before Attorney Charles Adams of the state's Administrative Services branch, who is serving as a judge, are expected to bring the city and the union closer together on many of the points not agreeable to the city. Library plans Plans for a new branch library to be constructed east of the South Miami city hall on land donated to Metro by the city are on schedule, according to South Miami City Manager Jack Present. Architect Wray Succop told the city manager that work on the library's final plans will be completed in time for the county to go to bid in September or October for construction of the one-story, 11,000 square foot library. "I believe that the library will be under construction in November or December," the city manager said. The library will have separate adult and children's reading rooms, in addition to a meeting room which can be used for movies, art shows or lectures. Metro moved the construction of the South Miami branch library higher on its priority list because of the dedication of the property site by South Miami. The new library will replace the present South Miami branch library, which has been housed in the city's community building to the north of city hall. With the completion of the new library, the community building will revert to the city and be used as a meeting site for senior citizens and other groups.
