C. Gables police warn residents of con men

By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer | Is someone trying to steal your money? | If so, the Coral Gables Police Department wants to know. They need your help in tracking down suave con men and women and put them out of business. | Two Coral Gables residents have been swindled by professional bunco artists and countless other victims have not reported the crimes, according to local law enforcement officers. | "We have had two cases which were reported, but we know there have been others," said a spokesman for the Police Department. "Many people are embarrassed to tell anyone that they have been taken in by these confidence men." | In the meantime, Chief William G. Kimbrough has had a list of warnings printed and distributed to all Coral Gables banks. | According to Police Public Information Officer Dennis Koronkiewicz, more than 250,000 account holders throughout the city will be receiving the printed material this month. | One of the common confidence games, say police, is when a stranger calls up and says he is a bank examiner, auditor, or some other bank authority on the trail of a crooked teller. He may then ask for your cooperation in trapping the guilty one by withdrawing money from your account. | The most important thing to remember is not to withdraw your money, according to Kimbrough. Whether a scheme is successful or not, it should always be reported to the bank and to the police.
