Make a Miccousukee meal at home
Ethnic is "in" even in food and the South Floridian has a unique opportunity to taste Indian foods concocted from native Florida ingredients at the Miccosukee Tribe's Second Annual Indian Art Festival, which continues through Jan. 1 (see cover story). Miccosukee food booths and a special luncheon buffet provide the opportunity to taste these Indian dishes and the following recipes tell you how to prepare them at home. Pumpkin fried bread 4 cups self-rising flour 1 1/2 cups sugar (or honey) 1 eight oz. can pumpkin Put flour in bowl. Make a hole in the middle of the flour. Gradually add pumpkin to hole and work flour into pumpkin. Add sugar. (If dough needs more water or flour, add as necessary.) Dough is ready when it feels elastic. Take a small fistful of dough and pat into 1/2 inch thick patty. Use excess flour from edge of bowl to dry dough on the outside of the patty. Heat oil and fry patties until golden. Dry on paper towels. Indian burger Omit sugar and pumpkin from above dough recipe and substitute the same amount of water to make plain fried bread dough. Form flat patties from dough. Add salt and pepper to taste to cooked ground beef. Place small amount of cooked meat in center of dough patty. Cover with another dough patty and press down edges. Fry until golden. Sofkee 1/2 gallon water (boiling) 2 1/2 cups washed rice Pinch of baking soda While the water is boiling, add the rice and baking soda. Cook 15 minutes. Stir occasionally. Fried deer meat Cut three pounds of deer meat into stew chunks. Pour enough oil to cover bottom into frying pan. Salt deer meat. Heat oil, then add enough chunks of deer meat to cover bottom of pan. Fry uncovered until brown. Turn pieces and continue cooking. Makes six servings. Garfish Cut fish into four inch chunks. Salt. Fry until golden. Sprinkle with mustard or hot sauce.

When and where to replenish New Year's party punches
Though visions of sugarplums may dance in the heads of the under-18 crowd during the holiday season, spirits of quite a different nature often dance in the heads of New Year's revelers. Ushering out the old year and welcoming the new is usually accompanied by private parties, when friends gather together to lift glasses in celebration. If you're the host and the glasses need re-filling, the following outline of liquor store hours in your area, including special New Year's Eve extensions, may help you determine where to make your "run." In the city of South Miami, retail liquor stores may sell alcoholic beverages from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. the following day, Monday through Saturday. On Sunday, the hours are 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. the following day. In Miami, liquor stores are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays. On New Year's Eve, however, liquor stores may remain open until midnight. Throughout the week, grocery stores may sell beer and wine during hours they are regularly open. Hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday for liquor stores in unincorporated Dade County. On Sundays, you're out of luck, except for beer, which can be purchased at grocery stores during hours regularly open. On New Year's Eve, liquor store hours have been extended to midnight. In West Miami, liquor store hours are 7 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Saturday. On Sunday, hours are 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Retail liquor stores in Coral Gables will remain open until 2 a.m. New Year's Eve. Normal hours are 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. the following day, every day of the week. Though the police departments wish everybody a happy New Year, they also caution against mixing drinking and driving. "If you have a party, you are somewhat liable for the people that leave your party," said Dennis Koronkiewicz, public information officer for the Coral Gables Police Department. "You do have a moral and legal responsibility for your guests. I think it would be very gracious for hosts of a party to offer to pay the taxi fare or arrange for a ride, if a guest is incapable of driving."
