Students elected to math club
Twenty students at Coral Gables Senior High School have been honored this week by being elected to Mu Alpha Theta, international high school and junior college mathematics club. Dr. Harold V. Huneke, the club's national secretary treasurer and professor of mathematics at the University of Oklahoma, announced the following Gables students were extended memberships: Gloria Barrera, Ramon Barrera, Cathy Bearman, Benjamin Bohlmann, William Bourne, Norman Bradford, Sara Braduan, Susan Cohen, Steve Davis, Jay Friedland, Luis Garcia, William Glaser, William Jackson, Lorraine Katz, Juan Lauelas and Jeanete Lucki. Also elected to the club were Kenneth Pierce, Douglas Seckinger, Marjorie Shaw and Avery Wellman. Mrs. Jo Anne Taber serves as the faculty sponsor for Mu Alpha Theta at Coral Gables Senior High. Only those schools with excellent mathematics programs can earn membership in the club. All courses in math and the qualifications of the faculty and students are examined in detail by the club's officials before a school is admitted. To be eligible for membership, a student must complete with distinction at least four semesters of college math and be enrolled in the fifth semester. The math students must also have an overall grade average of at least a B in all their high school work. Mu Alpha Theta was founded in 1957 at the University of Oklahoma and has grown to more than 1,500 clubs in 46 states as well as Canada, Japan, Puerto Rico, the Canal Zone, Iceland, Turkey, Brazil and Okinawa.
