Hurricane baseball benefactor named committee chairman

George Light, the philanthropist whose donations and dedication have helped build the University of Miami baseball program and facilities into one of the most outstanding in college baseball, was recently named chairman of the UM Baseball Committee. Light, along with Vice-Chairman Joe Kurtz and Secretary James Horland and seven individual committee chairmen, immediately set out upon the task of raising funds, securing publicity and selling tickets to fill college baseball's newest facility, Mark Light Stadium. Replete with a concrete seating structure behind home plate and going towards both the first and third base lines, the stadium can now comfortably seat approximately 4,500 fans. Year after year, though, accomplishing these goals seems less and less of a "task" as the UM program continually garners local community support as well as national prestige. One of the major reasons Miami's tickets sales continue to increase year after year, in addition to offering an extremely reasonable ticket package, is the outstanding play of the Hurricanes. Under the guidance of coach Ron Fraser, the UM teams have gained a reputation of playing agressive, exciting baseball. In addition to being agressive and exciting, the 'Canes do something else that turns the fans on—win! In Fraser's 14 years as head coach, Miami has amassed an amazing 435-182-6 record and in the past six years, has earned bids to five district NCAA tournaments. The 'Canes won the 1974 District III tournament, and advanced to the finals of the NCAA College World Series where they lost, 7-3, to the powerful University of Southern California. Fraser, whose team was ranked number one in the nation going into the national tournament, was voted NCAA Coach of the Year, Rawlings Adirondack Big Stick Coach of the Year and Sporting News Baseball Coach of the Year. With power, pitching and that Fraser trademark—speed—this year's team promises to be one of the most exciting and agressive in recent years when it opens its home stand Feb. 22 against St. Leo College.

We want to know your sports news

The Times/Guide is dying to hear from you. If you belong to a club, organization, league or local group and you have a sporting event coming up that you would like your neighbors to hear about, let us know. We'll do our best to pass the word along. Or if you've already held the event and have results, let us know about that, too. The Times/Guide wants to print results and notices of events that involve you. Anything that you or your friends are doing in the way of sports, we want to know about. This could include things like bowling, golf, tennis, sailing or softball. We ask only two things. First, the event must be local. That is, it must be happening or have happened in Coral Gables, South Miami, West Miami or South Dade. If the event was held someplace else, it should involve local people. The second thing is we have to meet our deadlines. We publish twice a week-on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Copy for Wednesday's paper must be in our office no later than 6 p.m. Monday. For Saturday's paper, we must have your copy by 6 p.m. Thursday. You can mail your results and notices to Times/Guide Sports, 4627 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables, 33146. Or you can call Frank Tursi at 666-7981. Either way, we want to hear from you.
