movies

SILVER STREAK—Gene Wilder encounters murder, mystery, and romance in a comedy aboard a deluxe express train bound from Los Angeles to Chicago with a cargo of forged art works in "Silver Streak." What the viewer does not encounter is a good movie. More like an entertaining roller coaster, "Streak" veers aimlessly from one aspect to another through its slow first hour, until comic Richard Pryor makes a most welcome entrance. Wilder does what he can, along with Pryor, Jill Clayburgh (Gable and Lombard," "Griffin and Phoenix") and Patrick McGoohan ("Secret Agent," "The Prisoner"). Director Arthur Hiller deserves the blame for not keeping tighter control and discipline on the script and the film itself. Mildly entertaining, yet highly erratic. Underrated PG (for language) at the Dadeland Twin and the Miracle Theater for four weeks. NICKELODEON—You can have an excellent cast (Burt Reynolds, Ryan O'Neal, Tatum O'Neal, Stella Stevens, Brian Keith), a six million dollar budget, a director of previous merit, Peter Bogdanovich ("The Last Picture Show," "Paper Moon," "What's Up, Doc"), and an intriguing topic— the early days of silent film-making— and still end up with a disappointing, uninvolving, and everlong film. The intent to pay homage to the nickelodeon stars and film-makers is excellent, yet this overboard sincerity (like making a film within the framework of seeing a film), just does not work in this particular film. What looked good on paper did not translate as well to the visual medium. Rated PG, the nostalgic item with several good performances (and a very miscast Keith), continues at the Riviera, Kendall, and Westchester Twin Theaters.
