Legion Style Show Stars Gables Models

An added attraction at the luncheon for the women attending the American Legion convention was the presentation of an elaborate fashion show with models from the Helen Lane School of Charm. The luncheon, which was held in the Miami Colonial Hotel on Wednesday, featured a showing of clothes furnished by Dorothy Ann's shop in Coral Gables. Many of the models were students in the School of Charm's modeling course who had enrolled under the G.I. Bill of Rights, The models under this Bill include some married women who work during the day and take the course at night. The Helen Lane School is the only approved modeling school in the area which enrolls ex-service women under the G.I. Bill. Married and employed women are eligible for enrolment.

More Honors Are Bestowed On Students at Ponce

By BETTY NEWMAN Gold medals galore are being distributed around Ponce to the lucky winners of the contests that have been taking place throughout the school year. Winners of the Civitan Essay Contest to receive gold medals are Helen Johanson, Jerre Brigham, Arthur Chavez, and Darryl McCall. These students will have their entered in the finals. The Woman's Club will present prizes in assembly to the winners of their poetry contest. According to correspondence from Mrs. Ruth Engle, poetry contest chairman, superior scribblers are respectively, Helen Johanson for "Vignettes," Betty Newman for "The Heron," and Denis O'Donovan for "The Pyromaniac." Honorable mention in this contest goes to Leo Roberts, Jane White, Gloria Helfeitz, and Marion Conway. MUSICAL DATE CHANGES. Announcement has been made that the musical, "Carousel," is to be held on May 22 and 23, instead of the fifteenth and sixteenth. This postponement was made, as the Coral Gables Elementary school auditorium is not available on the nights originally chosen. SPANISH STUDENTS EXAM Eight second and third year Spanish students from Ponce took part in the second annual written and oral Spanish contest sponsored by the Southeastern chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. This was announced by Miss Eloise Patterson, contest chairman, and also teacher of the Spanish "savvy" at Ponce. Diana Roesch, Anne Topping, Bonnie Burns, Donald Wadsworth, Peter Ray, Kathy Einfeldt, Nattie Lucas, Jeanne Lamper, Jerre Brigham, Ed Shaw, and Harriet Quillian took part in this exam and all reported that it was indeed a "killer." "They were constructing the University right outside the window and to top off the noise of the hammers and saws, the teachers turned up the mike in the lecture hall which combined to drown all sound except an extremely loud roar," says Kathy Einfeldt. Nevertheless, many students from the other schools were reluctant to compete in this examination, but Ponceites jumped to take this they do for all contests, and so many desired to take the test that some had to stay behind since a limited number is allowed each school. FOOTBALL CALLS HALT After numerous afternoons spent in the hot sunshine clunking heads together, the Red team came out the final winner in the intramural contest. Team members will be given silver footballs at the awards assembly in token of their outstanding participation in the spring gridiron sports. N.H.S. TAPS STUDENTS Following established Ponce traditions sixteen juniors and nine seniors were admitted into National Honor society last week at assembly. Wearers of the little blue and gold ribbons are Laurence Day, Eve Vance, Denis O'Donovan, Anne Topping, Jeanne Lamper, Betty Jo Miller, Alice Davidson, E. P. Ellis, Jeanette Watters, Sally Peacock, Jane Lewis, Charles Steers, Bette June Brown, Betty George, Joan Greene, and Joan Ditzenberger. These being members of the junior class, they will lead the N.H.S. group next year. Lucky seniors, accepted for membership in this last tapping of their high school career, are Doris Parrish, Paul Weier, Barbara Bowyer, Joan Browne, Thomas Hale, Grace Jones, Elena Morales, Barbara Noel, and Frances Olson. DARRYL WINS AGAIN In competition with 200,000 other students from all over the United States, Darryl McCall racked up further honors by placing sixth in the nation in an American Legion contest on citizenship. After winning first place at Ponce, Darryl competed with other state winners in Gainesville. There copping top position, he went on to Birmingham and took first place there also. Then he went to the fair city of Atlanta and won second place, losing by a mere point. Darryl received $100 for his oratorical efforts and two medals. He now owns enough medals to put him up as a rival to Goering. "I guess sixth in the States is O.K." he says, "But I'd feel better if it were first place."
