Maynard-Page Will Open Coral Gables Store Today
A firm that has been known for the finest in jewelry in South Florida since 1902 comes to Coral Gables with the opening of Maynard-Page at 10 a.m. Saturday at 365 Coral Way in the Miracle Mile section. The Maynard-Page string quartet, under the direction of Earl Barr Hansen, will play from 3:30 to 5:30 on opening day. Eugene Mumpower, president of the firm, announced. The quartet is well known to radio listeners, appearing on the Maynard-Page sponsored program "Gems of Melody" over WIOD, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. The new two-story, air-conditioned building that was constructed by Roy Page contains a total floor space of 5,160 square feet. Attractively Decorated A total of 1,938 square feet of the ground floor is occupied by the store proper, which has been attractively paneled in oak with a French gray finish. Show cases also carry out this motif. The floor is carpeted in aqua green, with walls carrying out the color scheme in a lighter tint. Rose-colored indirect lighting is produced by Cole cathode strip lighting. A unique feature of the main floor is the bride's room, where the prospective bride may select her silverware, silver service and china privately under expert guidance. Another private room will afford privacy to diamond purchasers. Upholstered, custom built chairs will enable customers to remain seated while making purchases at any of the counters. The remaining part of the 3,060 square feet of main floor space is occupied by offices, vaults and a stock receiving vestibule. Watch Repair Featured The second floor contains the watch repair, engraving, jewelry and diamond setting departments, a central accounting office, warehousing facilities, air conditioning unit and additional office space. The watch repair department is completely air conditioned and located so that employees are afforded a north light. All of the departments on the second floor will serve the Miami and Fort Lauderdale stores as well as the Coral Gables store. Firm Started in 1902 The first jewelry store was opened in Miami in 1902 and operated under the name of "Maynard's", which was later incorporated as O. W. Maynard, Inc. The present name came into being in 1931. The Fort Lauderdale store was opened on September 14, 1946. Eugene Mumpower, the present president of the firm, came to Miami in 1938 from Newark, N.J. where he was vice president and treasurer of Jones and Woodland, manufacturing jewelers and comptroller for Clements and Co., jewelers. In June, 1939 he became treasurer of Maynard-Page and at the same time acquired controlling interest. In April, 1940, he bought the remaining interest. Mumpower is a resident of Coral Gables, having purchased his residence at 1021 Avenue Manati in 1939. Potential Market In discussing the opening of the Coral Gables store he stated that experience had shown that a large, potential market existed in Coral Gables and the southwest section and that Maynard-Page felt that a service was owed to their present customers and other residents of this area. The new store will allow them to shop in the area in which they reside, with parking and other conveniences attendant. Mumpower stated that he thought that Coral Gables would have a population of at least 75,000 within the next five years and would serve a surrounding trading area of 150,000. Officers of the Coral Gables store, in addition to Mumpower, include Harry W. Link, Jr., vice president and Mrs. Helen Watson, secretary. Link is also a Coral Gables resident and a member of the firm of Cohn and Torrey, investment brokers in the duPont Building. Maynard-Page will offer a complete line of diamonds, watches, jewelry, silver, leather goods, china, stemware, gifts, ceramics and novelties. From 18 to 20 employees are contemplated for the Gables store. THIS IS THE EXTERIOR OF THE NEW MAYNARD-PAGE JEWELRY STORE which will open its doors tomorrow at 365 Coral Way. Gableite Eugene Mumpower heads the corporation.
