Round the World Cruises Possible

Round-the-world cruises will be possible early this summer, according to William P. Mason, local agent of Travel, Inc. He has been notified by the New York office of the American President Lines that their pre-war fortnightly globe-encircling service using President liners has been partially resumed. In addition Mason said that a low-priced austerity conducted cruise is planned using the S.S. Marine Adder, sailing May 23d from San Francisco through the Orient to India and, after a number of ports of call in the Far East, returning to California in August. "Foreign pleasure travel," the announcement continues "is far below normal. The demand is greater than in any previous year but less than 10 per cent of the accommodations available in 1938 may be utilized now. In addition there are a great many limitations due to inadequate facilities for travelers in the war-torn countries. Independent travel therefore becomes complex at times, whereas a cruise ship with its interesting ports of call is at all times the traveler's hotel. Such service has been virtually non-existent but now these American-flag liners are making round-the-world service possible for travelers again." In addition the American President Line will have two new ultra modern deluxe passenger liners, the S.S. President Cleveland and the S.S. President Wilson making their maiden voyages in the Trans-Pacific service sometime this summer.

Boxers Meet Fort Myers Tonight

Paced by Ed Beckman, Coral Gables Youth Center director, and Phil Logan, former West Point boxing coach, nine Gables ringmen departed this morning for the Florida West Coast to tangle with the Ft. Myers mittmen tonight. Accompanied by Betty Wagner, Life cover girl, and Kay Duggar, co-sponsors of the Gables team, the squad will be feted to a sight-seeing tour of the city as well as overnight accommodations. Beckman hopes to turn back the West coasters with Bill Parker, 20 pound; Francis Merwede, 120; Ward O'Connell, 125; Jim Revels, 130; Bob McDonald, 132; Dick Lee, 135; John Nelson, 147; Al Maxwell, 160, and Leon Lonstein in the 175 pound division. Western red cedar has been tested and found satisfactory as a substitute for Spanish cedar in the manufacture of cigar boxes.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI ENJOYS BEST SPORTS YEAR IN HISTORY

With two varsity teams having already closed successful seasons, two others assured of success and four spring sports teams poised for what should be good campaigns, the University of Miami is enjoying the greatest sports year in its history. Last fall's football team won eight games, losing only to North Carolina and Louisiana State, which numbered among the nation's first 10. In basketball, the team found itself after breaking even in the first 12 games and proceeded to win 14 straight over much tougher opposition, closing with a 20 won and 7 lost record by losing to Western Kentucky in the finals of the S.I.A.A. tournament and Western Kentucky ranked eighth in the nation in basketball. Swimmers Victorious The swimming team has won all four of its dual matches by wide margins and is likely to go undefeated. The boxing team won its first five team matches and has in Arthur Saey, the national intercollegiate heavyweight champion. The tennis team, which won 15 straight in interclub competition in South Florida, launched its collegiate campaign by blanking Florida 9-0 and L.S.U. 6-0, and should have a successful season. Strong teams seem assured in baseball and golf while track is also expected to add its share of victories to a season's record which thus far numbers 53 victories and 11 losses in dual competition. Hold Grid Crown Miami has already won the state crown in football, shares the championship in basketball with Florida, wins in boxing by default and is off to a good start in tennis. Since the bulwark of the various teams is freshmen and sophomore material composed of men recently out of the armed services, the Hurricanes seem headed for a golden era in the world of sports.
