PEOPLE Places & Things

Contrary to their usual habit of taking off on a vacation after shuttering their doors (Ro'al) for the summer dog days, Albert H. and Rose Friedman will be at home most of the time. The Friedmans' have a therapeutic pool under construction in their backyard at 425 Malaga Ave. On doctor's orders, Mrs. F. will soak in it at a heated temperature of 90 degrees. They'll still make a New York buying trip in August. We've received a change of address card from G. K. and Sibyl Zain from their new home in Boca Raton. That means they're headed North to the coolness of their North Carolina mountain place at Hendersonville. It's a handsome brick home with unusually lovely grounds. Edward G. Harris, 660 Davis Rd., has been appointed general manager of the Joseph Abraham Ford agency in Miami. Harris came here from Oak Park, Ill., in 1953, to become vice president and general manager of Anthony Abraham Chevrolet, and retained that position until the dealership was sold last winter to Dumas Milner. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph C. Binford of 443 Aragon Ave. attended the recent graduation ceremonies at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania where their son, Ralph Jr., received his degree in mechanical engineering. The degree was awarded "with distinction," the highest honor accorded by the faculty. Binford also was cited for the highest excellence in design engineering and was elected to Sigma Tau, honorary engineering fraternity. He was formerly a student at the Merrick Demonstration School in Coral Gables and the Ransom School of Coconut Grove. Linda Irene Howell is one of seventy-five college and university students whose homes are in Florida who have registered thus far to attend the seventh quadrennial National Methodist Student Conference, Aug. 26-31 at the University of Illinois. A total attendance of about 5,000 is expected which would make it the largest Methodist student conference in history. Melanie Buck Phipps and her sister, Valerie, are now enjoying a seven-week tour of the Mediterranean. They will visit Spain, France, England, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Buck, 1514 Zuleta Ave., received a card Monday which was written just two hours before they were to dock in Spain. Mrs. Buck says she thinks they might have had a touch of sea-sickness — they said the ship was "really rockin'"! Linda Leayengood, of 418 Candia Ave., won second place overall in the recent Junior Dixie Water Ski Tournament Junior Girls division at Cypress Gardens. The pint-sized ski expert, a member of the Greater Miami "Ski-ters," took third place in both the trick and slalom events, and won first place in a special novice class of the tournament. Robert E. Hendricks, of the School of Education, University of Miami, was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Northwestern University June 18. Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Cummings, 4100 Pinta Ct., recently returned from the Rotary International Convention at Tokyo, Japan. On the way they toured London, Rome, Paris, Athens, Cairo, Jerusalem, New Delhi, Bangkok, and Hong Kong. On the return trip they stopped at Kyoto and Osako, Japan, and Honolulu. James Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Meyer, 1142 Milan Ave., received a BS degree in physics from Antioch College Saturday. A graduate of Coral Gables High School, Meyer entered Antioch in 1956. Under the liberal arts college's cooperative plan, which requires off-campus job experiences, he has worked with Square D. Co., Detroit, Mich.; Florida State University; and Antoich Physics Department. He plans to continue his education at Johns Hopkins University, majoring in physics. He has been awarded a Gilman Fellowship and junior instructorship from the University. Gary Fondren is off to Europe for a three-month tour. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Courtney M. Fondren, 300 Alhambra Cir. Mr. Fondren and Gary drove to New Orleans last week, where Gary boarded his ship. While there, Mr. Fondren had the pleasure of offering congratulations to his friend, Shep Morrison, mayor of New Orleans, on his appointment as ambassador to Organization of American States. Katherine Cleland Davis of the University of Miami Law Library, recently was in Cambridge, Mass., to attend the fifth biennial Law Librarians' Institute at the Harvard Law School. William M. Zerbey is back in the offices of Goodbody & Co. here following a three months' school at the stock brokerage's home office in New York. VALERIE MELANIE LINDA
