STUCK??

Need something done and can find neither the time nor someone to do it? A reliable college student is eager to be a tutor in most high school subjects, a receptionist in a doctor's office (own uniforms), shopper for those who are housebound or want something unique, a traveling companion. Unusual Church Secretary This Gal Dog-Sits, Baby-Sits and 'Witnesses'

By RAYMOND LANG Times Staffer Meet Mildred Simpson, a most unusual secretary. Works on Sunday mornings, is often a "witness," and very often a baby-sitter and "dog-sitter." Mildred, you see, is a secretary in a church. It's the Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 DeSoto Blvd. "Mildred," I asked, "what's it like to be secretary in a church office. Is it different than in a regular business office?" "You never know what's going to pop up" she said frankly. Mildred caught you by surprise. What could "pop up" in an office. Oh, yes. You then remembered. This is a 'church' office. WITNESSES "We have a lot of weddings and very often they need a witness. So I have to go in to make it legal. "And sometimes someone wants to visit a patient in the hospital (Veterans' Administrational Hospital is across the street). "And one day," Mildred went on, "a woman came in and told me she was going to visit a patient and would I please take care of her baby? "Of course I did," said Mildred. "And a few moments later, the same woman came back in with a German Shepard and asked me if I would take care of him too. I did." OTHER SIDE These are the lighter moments. There's a more serious side. "There is a voluminous amount of paper work and records," Mildred said. On her desk, envelopes ready for mailing. Pencils and pads ready for telephone messages. "But a church office is different than another office. We're not working with patients, clients and or customers. "It's more like a family working together. "We're all working toward the same goal . . . to know His will better . . . to show what our purpose is in life . . . and how we can help our fellow man. "And this last Sunday, we received 61 new adults and 26 children." On Palm Sunday, 36 years ago, George Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables, and other church members attended the dedication of Coral Gables Congregational Church. GROWN "Since I have been here," Mildred said, "a Sunday School has been built and a chapel, which was given by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Moye. "And this office wing will be dedicated this month. It was given by the late George Tyson who did a great deal for the church." "When I first came here," said the former Oklahoma City resident, looking back to early 1953, "there was only one minister, myself and a janitor. "Now we have three ministers, three secretaries, a bookkeeper, a director of religion and education and a directed and three teachers in Sunday School." The ministers are Dr. Fred E. Cole, The Rev. Howard Huntzicker and The Rev. Charles Wicks. And the bookkeeper broke her wrist so she can't do her work until it heals. Guess who's doing the work. You're right. Mildred, who lives at 410 Aragon Ave., loves her work. She's glad she answered a telegram sent to her in Oklahoma City from Dr. Cole in Coral Gables. "He told me he needed a secretary and wouldn't I pinch hit for a while. "And I came and stayed." MILDRED SIMPSON

He Puts Auto in Wrong Pew--It Belonged to Judge

Judge Charles Spooner found himself in the position of accuser and judge recently when he tried the case of a man who usurped his private parking space. Cornell Wolf, 45, of 4430 SW First St., was to have been tried by substitute judge, Robert Brake, but Brake was unavailable and Wolf decided to enter a guilty plea and be tried by Spooner. Spooner fined him $5 court costs and asked him to refrain from parking in his reserved spot at the Rogers Building at the corner of Salzedo Street and Alhambra Circle.
