QUEEN OF SCHOOL ROOST Add Another R To 3 R's; This One's for Roberts
By BECKY DOYLE-QUINN Times Staffer Mrs. Jane Roberts has two main interests in life: her family, and your children. Mrs. Roberts, 2600 Columbus Blvd., is the first woman ever elected to serve as chairman of the Dade County School Board. A blue-eyed woman with salt-and-pepper hair, Mrs. Roberts is a warm and energetic person. She thinks quickly and talks with easy assurance, especially when it comes to school board policy. She has been active with the school board since its conception in 1957. Before that she was appointed by Governor Collins to serve on the Dade Budget Board, a check system for the old city commission. Mrs. Roberts' knowledge of the business world is not limited to school work. She has worked with her husband, Lyle Roberts, a local architect, since they came here in 1934. All of Mrs. Roberts' four children have attended or are attending Dade County Schools. They are Nancy, 21, now married and living in Fort Knox, Ky.; Art, 19, who is a sophomore at Gordon Military College in Georgia; Ann, 11, who will attend Ponce de Leon this fall; and Peggy, six, who is a second-grader at Merrick Demonstration. Does she worry that her children will get special consideration from their teachers because of her position? Not at all. She has known many of the teachers in the Coral Gables schools for years and fully expects them to discipline her children when they have it coming. To the contrary, she sometimes worries that Ann or Peggy will not live up to the conduct that is expected of them. Chairmanship of the school board does not conflict with Mrs. Roberts' home life except when it comes to the telephone. "The phone rings constantly! People call to vent their opinions all day long." She doesn't really mind but it does keep her from doing all her "home work." She is not afraid of controversy-in fact she thrives on it. "I have some very definite opinions and I'm not the least big hesitant to express them." Mrs. Roberts believes that communication between the board and the public is very poor. And she is striving to improve it. She sometimes tunes in on a nightly radio commentary-phone discussion program just to hear what people might be saying about the school board. She feels a "slow burn" when she realizes how wrongly informed some people are. People relations and communication are not the only things Mrs. Roberts wants to see improved. She is quite enthusiastic about strengthening the course of study. MRS. ROBERTS

She Wears Heirloom Of Fiance
Carol Jean Graham is wearing an heirloom engagement ring. It was given to her on June 12, the night she was graduated from Coral Gables High School, by her fiance, John Clifford Fryer Jr., and the ring was the engagement ring of his paternal grandmother. Mr. and Mrs. Harry William Graham, of 65 Morningside Dr., are announcing their daughter's engagement to John, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Clifford Fryer, of 750 Curtiswood Dr., Key Biscayne. Carol's wedding ring will be the wedding band of John's maternal grandmother when they are wed on September 9th. Carol was a member of the 1961 Deb's of Coral Gables making their bow at the Coral Gables Country Club.
