City Will Finance Chamber of Commerce With $5,000 Assist

The Chamber of Commerce asked for $6,500 and got up to $5,000 from the Coral Gables City Commission Tuesday to help it carry out its operations. Lee H. Smith, chamber manager, cited unforeseen expenses incurred in moving to the new offices last year and a new program of work. No money had been requested last year by the chamber after publicity and promotion had been set up in a separate operation by the city. The chamber, in addition to the $5,000 will get another estimated $2,000 from city bus advertising, which it handles. Its own budget income this year is for $21,400, but Smith said an additional $6,500 would be needed to maintain operation. Undergoing some changes since Smith took over Feb. 1, the chamber is now building its membership. Smith said the chamber was a year, possibly two, away from being on a sound financial footing.

Commission OKs Shelter

An experimental and demonstration underground shelter, constructed recently without permit on the west side of Le Jeune Road between South Dixie Highway and Avenue Menendez received the City Commission's blessing last week. The shelter, erected by Art Construction Co., had been approved by the Zoning Board before it went to the City Commission. L. M. Hovan, 417 Avenue Amalfi, was the only objector to the temporary shelter.

Property Owners Show Respect for Warrants

Issuance of warrants to recalcitrant sub-standard property owners in the Negro section of Coral Gables has brought results, City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. said Tuesday. Many of the dilatory delinquents have made necessary repairs rather than go to court, Robinson said. "We're getting better results than elsewhere in Dade County," said Robinson. F. B. Marshall, building and zoning director, reported that 85 per cent of needed repair work has been completed in Blocks 1A, 2A and 3A, of McFarlane Homestead subdivision.
