Last summer Callahan interned on the Atlanta Constitution. He plans to make a career in the newspaper profession. * * * Gableites were proud to see the big spread about Mary Katherine Strain, 4510 Santa Maria, in The Miami Herald, over the weekend. Mary Katherine is one of 195 young Americans selected to serve as teachers in East Africa in a project directed by Teachers College of Columbia University. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Strain. Judy Ann Grentner, bride-elect of Larry Baxter Stowe, will be honored by the members and guests of her mother's bridge club at a luncheon today, at the Riviera Country Club. Jody (Mrs. Benjamine W.) Turner, spokesman for the club said "It's the first of 'our' children to get married, and we feel the blow-of getting along in years." The no-name club of eight, have been meeting weekly, for 12 years at one anothers' homes. Judy, is the daughter of the John Grant Grentners, of 742 Paradiso Ave. * * * Now that Mrs. Lewis Smith of 1232 Coral Way has made a quick recovery from a painful accident this April, she and Mr. Smith will leave shortly on a trip to Europe. The night before the Smiths' 50th wedding anniversary, Mrs. Smith tumbled down some steps and broke bones in both arms and suffered a fractured ji as well. Bon voyage, Smiths.
MARC PELAEZ
Fifteen-year-old Marc Pelaez left last week for Europe on that well-known vessel the Santa Maria (lately of pirate fame). Marc's the son of Mr. and Mrs. Genaro Pelaez, 1400 S. Greenway Dr., and will be a sophomore at Christopher Columbus High next fall. On top of all that he's been one of our carriers for about a year, serving the downtown Gables section. We hope to get him back. The trip is a belated birthday (April 11) present for Marc. "My father thinks the best way to learn things is to travel. It will be my second trip. I went four years ago but this time I'm going alone. "Mother's family's in France and I'll see them. I've got to brush up on my French." * * * Stewart Goldstein is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Irving Goldstein, of 1535 Venetia. Stewart, a student actor at the Pasadena Playhouse in Hollywood, Calif., will spend the summer working with Adler-Built Construction Co., with which firm his father is an executive. * * * Southwesterns vacationing in Hendersonville, N.C., this week are Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lubin, and Debbie and David; Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Goodman, and their daughter Laurie; and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith and daughter. * * * The Shenandoah Garden Club, District 12, held installation of new officers June 7 at the home of rs. H. W. Stubbs, 1785 Chucunee. Directing executive was Mrs. J. L. Wilbur. New officers are president, Mrs. J. Bradley; first vice president, Mrs. C. Ed Moore; second vice president, Mrs. S. L. Hamilton; recording secretary, Mrs. H. Willett Stubbs; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Whitney Powers; and treasurer, Mrs. Kenneth Walker. * * * Kirk Callahan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kermyt W. Callahan Sr., 1201 Mariola Ct., has joined the staff of the Florida Keys Keynoter. To date, Callahan has devoted his efforts on the Keynoter to news and feature stories.
