Renzo Abbondandolo All-American Italian Seeks Better Cultural Relations
By BECKY DOYLE-QUINN Times Staffer In 1921, a young man came from his native Naples, Italy, to America on a scholarship to Columbia University. This year, four decades later, he was awarded the highest honors granted by the Italian government - the Solid Gold Star of Solidarity - for his "continued work to foster better relations between the United States and Italy on economic and cultural levels." His name is Renzo Abbondandolo and he lives in Coral Gables at 5210 Maggiore St. A tan, greying man of 61 years, Abbondandolo moved here from New York in 1947. Since then he has made himself well known in cultural and political circles. He founded the Dante Society in Miami, an organization to promote Italian culture. He is now serving as Grand Venerable of the Sons of Italy, the highest office in the state. Abbondandolo is an official city greeter for the City of Miami, appointed by the mayor. He speaks four languages fluently, Italian, French, Spanish, and "what I think is English." He says his life is dedicated to furthering better understanding between the United States and Italy. He is proud of his Italian heritage, which dates back to the 12th Century, but he is foremost an American. He was nominated "Man of the Year" by the International Club of Miami. "If America is the melting pot of the world, I say Miami is the melting pot of the Americas and we must do all we can to promote understanding between our countries." He travels to Europe and Italy usually every three years. Abbondandolo says that when he comes to Naples, the Communist press always prints a notice of his arrival referring to him as an American "agent." "If defending our American way of life makes me an agent, they can call me all the names they like - but I feel good doing it." A warm, kindly man, his brown eyes glow when he speaks of his native country -but they positively shine when he speaks of his adopted country and the opportunities he has found here. "When I came to America I was so attracted to the country I wanted to stay here. Then I had the pleasure of meeting a very charming young lady, she later became my wife, and that settled it. I stayed!" He and his wife, who also was born in Italy, have one daughter, Lila, who graduated from the University of Miami in 1952. She is now Mrs. Russ Costanzo, 411 Castania Ave., and the mother of two children, Laura, 7, and Larry, 14 months. R. ABBONDANDOLO

Connoiseur Thief
The theft at the home of Earle Van Sciver, 1013 Hardee Rd., June 21 was a front yard affair. Matter of fact, it was two busts, each valued at $300, which were on Van Sciver's lawn. Two cast iron flower pot holders worth $50 were taken along with the marble statues.
