Bus Service to Hammock To Start on Week Ends
Coral Gables strikes a blow for pedestrians this week. Matheson Hammock County Park, one of Dade County's most interesting recreation areas, will be made accessible to non-motorists on week ends and holidays by the addition of regular bus service. Beginning Saturday, July 8, Matheson Hammock buses will leave Coral Gables bus terminal every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. From Matheson Hammock, the buses will leave on the hour from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The route will traverse Ponce de Leon, Le Jeune Road and Old Cutler Road, pass the picnic grounds at Matheson Hammock and continue on to the bathing beach. This service will be available on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only. The fare is 20c from Coral Gables, 25c from Miami. Transfers are free from any Coral Gables or Miami line. Coral Gables student tickets will be honored. Matheson Hammock preserves one of the few remaining south Florida wilderness areas in virgin form. There are nature trails and a free picnic area for family picnics. A unique, atoll-like, salt-water lagoon has a sand beach and safe swimming. There is also a wading beach in a mangrove area.
Correction On Property For Club
It was incorrectly reported last week that one of three sites being considered by the Recreational Advisory Board for the site of Garden Club activities is the Malcolm Lovell property at Coral Way - Red Road. The property under consideration is the triangular shaped, city-owned land fronting on Coral Way between Alhambra Circle and Red Road.
We Await Test Results
Coral Gables is awaiting the results of tests on the Coconut Grove incinerator before deciding its next step on the smoke and fallout caused by the faulty operation of Miami's new plant. The Miami City Commission last week approved the series of tests to determine why the incinerator is not operating according to specifications. Gables City commissioners threatened to get an injunction recently after residents from a wide area around the controversial incinerator complained about foot odors and soot.
