Red-Bird Corner Rezoning Fails
Another assault on Coral Gables zoning failed recently when the City Commission turned down a proposal to commercialize the southeast corner of Red and Bird roads. The City Commission voted unanimously to disapprove the plan of owner Harry Harris to rezone the west 255 feet of the block bounded by Bird Road, Red Road and Avenue Algardi from residential to commercial. A large number of persons appeared before the Commission or signed petitions to protest. Harris, represented by attorney William J. Weissel, sought to change his plan to permit the construction of an apartment house buffer, but the Commission refused to hear the switch. The Zoning Board also turned down the commercial proposal unanimously May 8. Weissel indicated Tuesday that the courts would give his client relief because the land was purchased by Harris 35 years ago and the area across the street, not in Coral Gables, has since been commercialized.
From Us to Cartagena: Books for the Children
The People-to-People Program of Coral Gables dispatched a shipment of more than 100 children's books to Cartagena, Colombia last week as part of its sister-city affiliation activities. The books, all in English, were purchased by Coral Gables librarian, Margaret Beaton, with funds subscribed by organizations and individuals interested in the work of the program. The titles were selected by the director of the Colombian-American Center in Cartagena. The center is the only available means of teaching the English language and developing a knowledge of the United States among low-income residents of Cartagena. Our State Department pays the salary of the Director and provides a limited amount of equipment. Operating expenses and the cost of additional books and equipment must be covered by private subscriptions of both Americans and Colombians, and by the tuition fees charged. Enlarging the center's English library is only one of many ways in which the Coral Gables People-to-People Program is attempting to build goodwill in this critical area of the world. Several exchanges of personal visits, assistance to primitive school facilities in some of the poorer districts, and exchanges of civic courtesies have marked the three-year course of the affiliation. Coral Gables was the first American city to affiliate with a Latin-American city under this program.
City Purchases Some Advice
Maurice H. Connell and Associates Inc. was appointed consulting traffic engineers and consulting engineers for the sanitary sewer system by the Coral Gables City Commission last week. The firm will receive a $1,800 fee for advising the city on traffic and parking matters and $3,250 for advice on sanitary sewer engineering.

CG Sewage Wins Nod From State
Coral Gables' sewage treatment plant is not only colorful and non-odoriferous but efficient as well. The plant, operated by Ray Sampson, received an honorable mention from the Florida State Board of Health for "the best-operated, activated sludge plant serving over 10,000 population for the year 1960-61." Because of the keeness of the competition, said David B. Lee, director of the Bureau of Sanitary Engineering for the board, "it can be safely said that an honorable mention is almost as significant as receiving the award."

Woman Faces Court Over Mile Shoplifting Charge
A 51-year-old Southwest section woman has been charged with shoplifting at Jackson's, 45 Miracle Mile. Sadie Sallie Baskin, of 2901 SW 34th Ave., posted $300 bond and was released for trial later. The woman is charged with taking a carton of cigarets and a bag from Jackson's on a recent afternoon, according to manager Elmer Ayers and Anne Miller, clerk in the drug and cosmetics department. Ayers told Coral Gables police that the Baskin woman was observed taking the cigarets and slipping them into a bag by the clerk. She was kept under observation until she left through a back door. Ayers apprehended the woman after she threw the package into the street and attempted to flee. Officers Sarah Knight and Lewis J. Frederick picked up the woman at the store and brought her to the station where she was charged. The case has been set for July 18 in Municipal Court.

Quiet Here
Gables apparently had a safe and sane Fourth of July. The only out of the way incident reported by police was the tossing of a sparkler on a roof which failed to start a fire.
