Rabbi Skop, Cantor Will Start New Unit
Rabbi Morris A. Skop and Cantor Herman K. Gottlieb, who are leaving their posts at Temple Judea, said this week they will begin a new temple, Beth Shirah. A founder's meeting and social affair will be held July 9 at 8 p.m., in temporary headquarters at Sunniland Hall, 11539 S. Dixie Hwy. An announcement will be made at the meeting on the purchase of land for the temple. A Schedule for Sabbath and High Holy Day services and plans for the religious and Hebrew schools will also be revealed. Rabbi Skop was with Temple Judea for 12 years. Cantor Gottlieb was with Temple Judea for four years. They left over an internal dispute in the temple. No successors have been chosen.

We've Got a Pair of Parks Which Are Only for Looking
Did you know Coral Gables has two, triangular parks named for outstanding Gableites where children can not play? And though the parks are seven blocks from each other, there is an association between the two? One is Merrick Park at LeJeune Road and Miracle Mile. A plaque commemorates George Edgar Merrick, founder of Coral Gables. The second is Young Park, at Granada Boulevard and Castile Avenue. It is named for J. Lawrence Young, Coral Gables' first park superintendent in the 1920's. The association is this: Merrick, head of Coral Gables Corp., which started this city, hired Young as park superintendent. And in Young Park stands an object which represents some of the mightiest nations in the world - a Friendship Tree. Dedicated June 14, 1930, the tree was planted in soil from the Philippines, England, France, China, Cuba, Hawaii, Alaska and the United States. Merrick died in 1942. Six years ago, the city named the area opposite City Hall after him. The Merrick plaque was presented by the Historical Association of South Florida, of which he was its first president. The plaque commemorating the Friendship Tree was presented during the 1930 dedication by the Gables chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
