Gables Building Slows, 6 Permits

Coral Gables up and down construction industry had a down week last week when only six permits totalling $66,900 were issued by the Building Department. Largest permit went to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Gordon, 1615 Granada Blvd., for a residence, $28,100. Totals do not include land values. Other permits went to Mr. and Mrs. H. Boyd, 913 Wallace St., addition, $2,500. Lucas and Soroka, 331 Avenue Romano, residence, $17,000. Louis Alweiss, 345 Avenue Catalonia, screen enclosure, $1,700. Jacques Melloul, 359 Miracle Mile, alterations, $2,000.

Venetia Apts. Having Face Lifted

EARLY PHOTO SHOWS APARTMENTS' ENTRANCE The Venetia Apartments, one of the Gables' early architectural landmarks, is being modernized at a cost of approximately $85,000. Scaffolding now surrounds the Spanish-style apartments which are located at 2800 Toledo St. just across the street from Venetian Pools. Two brothers from New York, Gilbert and Alan Sens, are living in the apartments and supervising the work which is being done by their own building firm, Gilsen Construction Corp. Air conditioning is being installed in the 22 units and bathrooms and kitchens are being renovated. The exterior is being sandblasted. An early promotional brochure, from which the picture reproduced above is taken, describes the apartments and the town in this manner: "A city designed to give utmost in homelife, made to order on this beautiful grove, with no narrow streets or atrocious buildings to live down-that's Coral Gables." The brochure also noted that Paul Whiteman's band was among the attractions the previous winter at the Venetian Pools.

Merry-Go-Round Players Plan 10 Shows For Fall

Merry-Go-Round Playhouse-a children's theater directed by Ivan Kivitt - will present 10 plays in fall and winter. Casting will begin the first week end in August for the first play, "Cinderella." "The Emperor's New Clothes", will also be presented the same week end. Children and teenagers interested in acting will be needed for the presentations, Kivitt said. The next set to be presented will be "Alladin and His Wonderful Lamp" and "The Snow Queen." Starting in January Kivitt will put on "The Magic Crystal," "Snow White," "King Midas," "Falling Star," "Beauty and the Beast," and a special story written for the playhouse, "The Lost Lighthouse." Dates will be announced later. Performances will be held Fridays at 4:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 10 a.m., and 2 p.m. Sundays. The Merry-Go-Round Playhouse is located at 110 Aragon Ave.

Old UM Lab On Anastasia To Be Apartment

A former apartment building, once used by the University of Miami for a marine laboratory, appears headed for apartment use again. The Coral Gables Zoning Board Monday recommended that the new owner, B. R. Ham, be allowed to reconvert the old lab to apartment use at 439 Avenue Anastasia. Twenty dwelling units will be incorporated in the remodeled building. O. K. Houstoun Jr. is the architect.
