Cool, Man
Cooler heads will prevail at the South Miami Chamber of Commerce Building. Air conditioning will become a reality within the next 10 days, according to manager H. W. MacDonald. The building is used by many groups for their meetings, MacDonald said, and air conditioning will be a welcome addition, especially during the hot summer months.
STUCK??
Need something done and can find neither the time nor someone to do it? A reliable college student is eager to be a tutor in most high school subjects, a receptionist in a doctor's office (own uniforms), shopper for those who are housebound or want something unique, a traveling companion. Still Waters Run Deep, 'Canal' Home Owners Find
Coral Gables' non-existent canal between Orduna Drive and Granada Boulevard is still creating troubled waters for the City Commission. The undug canal, running east and west between the Coral Gables Waterway paralleling Avenue Parma and linking up with the canal in front of Doctors' Hospital, is coveted by abutting property owners in Block 44, Riviera Section. It was dedicated to the city years ago. Latest tempest over the canal that isn't and probably won't ever be, resulted Tuesday when Mrs. John F. Gibby, 808 Avenue Parma, appeared before the commission to appeal a Zoning Board decision. The Zoning Board had turned down the Gibby request to construct an addition to their home that would have been only five feet from the dedicated canal. Mrs. Gibby said that other property owners abutting the undug canal had received permission in the past to build closer than normally permitted and asked for the same privilege. The Commission, however, deferred making a decision on the request for one week until they can resolve the long-standing controversy over the non-existent canal. Mrs. Gibby threatened to take legal action to obtain the dedicated property if the Commission did not deed the property over. Commissioners told Mrs. Gibby that a lot of misinformation had been circulated about the city's position on the canal. The city on Sept. 22, 1960 offered to sell some of the end pieces to property owners, but later withdrew the offer when no agreement could be reached on price. No similar offer was to be made to the inside property owners until the end pieces were disposed of, according to City Attorney Ted Semple. The approximately 100 by 50-foot lots were valued at about $500 to $1,100.
Eisner Team Slow Pitch Champs in Gables Play
The Bill Eisner Real Estate team in the Coral Gables slow-pitch softball league bested last year's champions, Metro Consultants, 9-8, in the finals of the Youth Center's tournament. Gene Goff drove the tying and winning runs across in the bottom of the seventh inning. Manager Bill Archer credited their winning season to the bustling play of everyone. The Eisner team finished with a 15 win, 3-loss record. Players for the 1961 champs are: Richard Ewell, Don Kess-ler, Tom Barnes, Bill Archer, Fred Zoller, John Kaiser, Warren Teets, Annibal Torres, Cae-sar Rodriques, Ed Vasquez, Gene Goff, John Underwood, Nelson Remero, Threatte, and Harris. Top hitter for the season was Buddy Yoham, .574. The team's sponsor, Bill Eisner, received the winner's trophy immediately after the season final.
Landscape Loan
Up to $15,000 has been approved to be loaned for landscaping and beautification of the recently completed road improvement of San Amaro Drive at the University of Miami main campus. The funds were approved by the City Commission last week after it okayed the transfer of $50,000 from the special benefit to the working capital fund. UM will have five years to repay the six per cent loan.
