Their Acts Reach Your Pocketbook In City Affairs
The City Commission Tuesday approved in rapid order a series of resolutions and ordinances which set the financial course for fiscal 1961-62. It approved the real estate and personal property tax roll totalling more than $166 million, a jump of $8.9 over last year. Upped the millage from 17.69 to 19, with 16.21 mills for operating expenses, 1.79 for debt service and 1 mill for special benefits. This is expecte d to bring in $2.1 million. Authorized the expenditure of $3.6 million from the general fund. (The total budget including general, enterprise, pledged revenue, and refunding debt funds is $5.4 million, a drop from last year's $5.7 million. Appointed Ayers, Juriet and Bond to be its independent auditor. Took another step in getting a fiscal agent for a $1 million capital improvement program by instructing the city manager to proceed in negotiations. The issue would be backed by the cigarette tax. Authorized the transfer of $25,000 from the Special Benefits Fund to the General Fund for storm sewer work. Approved the transfer of an additional $29,950 from the same fund to the General Fund for repairs to the incinerator and grounds. And $33,822 more from the same fund for the purpose of meeting debt service requirements on $500,000 in sewer bonds issued in 1954. Already approved and incorporated in the budget was a pay boost to employes of more than $197,000.

Wooden Pole May Topple
University Cab has only one week to show cause why its temporary wooden radio antenna pole should not be removed from 306 Alcazar Ave. Deadline on removing the pole is Aug. 2, according to City Attorney Ted Semple.
City Fund For Building Moves Nearer
The $1 million capital improvement fund drew another step nearer Tuesday when the City Commission instructed City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. to write to fiscal agents for their proposals. The money, as proposed in the 1961-62 capital improvements program, would help finance $185,000 in road improvements in the downtown business section and $50,000 would be earmarked for the sidewalk repair program. Approximately $4,000 would go toward setting up plans for a new library. Street lights in residential areas would eat up $18,480. A new bridge on Blue Road would cost $25,000. Neighborhood parks would get $31,460. Improvements at the City Garage would total $32,900. And $150,000 would go to refinance the Fire Station loan. Another pay as you go version of "Operation Bootstrap" was scrapped by the Commission because of the delays it would cause in getting the capital improvement program underway.
