PEOPLE Places & Things

Mrs. Cliff Hendrick, 1426 So-pera Ave., and daughter Sherry, are enjoying horseback riding daily in Balsam, N.C. Mr. Hendrick plans to join his family soon for a breather in he mountains near Asheville. ★ ★ ★ Watching a yogi demonstration will be members of the Coral Gables Chaper, National Secretaries Association when they meet in dinner session at 7 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Coral Gables Country Club. The club has arranged for all dinner meetings to be held at the County Club according to Dorothy Rayner, 131 Antiquera Ave., chairman. ★ ★ ★ Word comes from the Navy that Gilbert E. Simmons, quartermaster seaman, USN, serving aboard the destroyer USS Stormes, participated in recovery operations for Air Force Capt. Virgil I. (Gus) Grissom, second U.S. astronaut. Gilbert is the son of Mrs. Lucille Ethier of 225 Salamanca Ave. ★ ★ ★ Three 13-year-old Coral Gables girls and a friend had the time of their lives "on their own" at a tourist lodge last week. Janet Spooner, daughter of Judge and Mrs. Charles H. Spooner, 826 Ortega Ave., and three of her friends, Barbara Collier, 1029 Mariposa Ave.; Nancy Kuyper, 1411 Pazarro; and Marilyn Warren, 4649 SW 12th St., had "a blast," as they put it. They were the guests of Cherry Hymes, whose parents, formerly of 4600 SW 11th St., own Davis Courts in Dunnellen, 30 miles west of Ocala. The girls, all of whom attend Ponce de Leon Junior High School, had their own room. Cherry stayed with them. She is planning to visit them here next month and they are already busy formulating plans to do it all over again at Christmas. ★ ★ ★ Mrs. Robert Lamb, 1542 Alcala Ave., and Mrs. Rex Rowell now of Jacksonville, will see a life-long hope realized this summer. Mrs. Lamb and Mrs. Rowell (formerly Nancy Lefholz) grew up here together. Mrs. Lamb's family has always vacationed in Balsam, N.C., and Nancy always wanted to go there. Well, this summer she will. Nancy, her husband and her three children will visit the Lambs at their summer home this August. Nancy is currently home visiting her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Rothwell Lefholz, at 4301 Monseratte. ★ ★ ★ Mr. and Mrs. Connie Mack Jr., will be houseguests of the Christopher Tysons, 1490 Sevilla Ave., this weekend. The result: a quick social whirl. The Macks will be honor guests at a buffet dinner tomorrow night (Friday) at the Country Club and then Saturday night the Steve Hessens will host them at a cocktail party. The visit is part-business, part-pleasure. Mack is in town before going to Cape Coral where his company, Gulf American Title, has real estate interests. ★ ★ ★ Houseguest of Anthony and Genevieve Abraham of Alhambra Circle until earlier this week was Father Dennis Mooney of Beirut, Lebanon. Father Mooney, who has spent the past 17 years in the Middle East, is a director of the Pontifical mission to Palestine. ★ ★ ★ Misses Junia Sells and Bette Stone recently returned to their home at 1410 Alberca St. from the Presbyterian Bible Conference in Montreat, N.C. While there, says Miss Sells, they enjoyed numerous concerts given by the UNC Music School. On the return trip they visited friends in Atlanta and St. Petersburg. ★ ★ ★ We got a chuckle in the office through the inadvertent placement of a photograph and an advertisement in the July 13th issue of the Times. On page 18, there was a picture of the William C. Parkers working in their yard at 300 Vizcaya Ave. Mr. Parker was digging vigorously in the ground. Next to it was a Times ad headed, "Don't Bury It in the Sand." This week we got a note from Gableites Earl and Allene Cox from their summer home at West Olive, Mich. The Coxes noticed the humor and commented on it. They also said they enjoy "every issue of the Times." This makes us feel good. ★ ★ ★ Joseph DeMaria, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. DeMaria, 831 Cortez St., is home on leave from the Army this week. Joe graduated from Coral Gables Sr. High and attended the University of Miami. He has just completed his basic military training at Ft. Jackson, S.C., and received a letter of commendation. Joe will leave for Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind., next Friday and from there will probably be sent to Germany. Since he is with the Army Security Agency, his family may not know just exactly where he is stationed for the next two years.
