Cutting Case Leaves Pair In Hospital
A 40-year-old Coral Gables Negro has been charged with assault with intent to commit murder in one of the worst cutting cases on record. Rubin H. Lamar, 1231⁄2 Short St., turned himself in to Gables police Saturday night after being sought for the attempted murder of his estranged wife, Ammie Sue Lamar, 38, and Mattie Cephus, 43, 105 South Dixie Hwy. Friday night at the Cephus apartment. The women, both now reported in "satisfactory" condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital, had been listed as "critical" from multiple and severe laceration and stab wounds. According to Officer Henry Porterfield, Lamar went to the apartment and a quarrel ensued between Lamar and his wife. The Cephus woman joined in and was attacked by Lamar using a razor-sharp pen knife, found at the scene by the police. Lamar's wife attempted to get away, but was also cut down. Fire Department emergency crewman Robert R. Dymond, who answered the call with Fireman Jerome Kirk, described the scene in frightening terms. They used up practically all the supplies in treating the victims, Dymond said. Lamar had been scheduled to come up in Municipal Court on a previous charge of beating his wife.

Helpful Hints For The Traveling Photographer
Snapshot photography is so much a part of travel these days that camera manufacturers look on tourists as their main market. For the professional and the talented amateur, travel photography often means a livelihood or part income. For the tourist, it is usually a personal record to help memory enjoy the trip long after it has ended. So here are some camera tips for the tourist by Bill Mason of Travel Inc. Remember it's often necessary to shoot from the hip at some unexpected but colorful scene or event. This means that the better you know your camera, the more certain you will be of a good result. So practice before leaving on the journey. You need sharp focus without having constantly to re-focus the camera, which means keeping the camera set on a distance of about 10 feet, setting a small lens opening (the f reading) and using fast films, both color and black and white. Also before you leave, check the camera as you would an automobile: the shutter, the film winder, the rangefinder, the light meter. Take with you lens tissues and a lens brush, because you'll meet all kinds of conditions "on the road" that you don't get at home. Buy some thin layers of foam rubber to wrap your equipment, and hold the bundle together with rubber bands, so that vibration, especially in aircraft, doesn't cause disorder in camera and light meter. Keep gadgetry down. Take a haze filter and a graduated yellow filter for black and white film. The graduated yellow filter — yellow at top to clear at the bottom — can be left on your camera for almost all shots to give depth and contrast. For color film, a skylight filter eliminates haze. Keep the instruction sheets from the film packets. They're valuable in the first place for information about the film, secondly if your meter is affected by humidity or vibration. Tropical damp and heat sometimes form a fungus which causes meter to stick. As a temporary remedy, open the meter cell to the sun for a few moments, or until the needle of the meter registers. Some plastic bags retain moisture in the tropics, so use a waterproof canvas bag to hold the equipment. If you expose your film in excessive tropical heat or humidity, put the containers in a box of rice which will absorb the moisture. Remember that although you can buy film almost anywhere it is often very expensive outside the United States, and for shorter trips, it would be as well to take your needs with you. If you are traveling for more than a month, it is advisable to airmail color film back to America for processing. Some countries don't allow you to take in more than one camera. They will place any others you have in bond until you leave, so leave at the same point or make provisions to have the camera available at whatever point you intend departing. And register foreignmade cameras before leaving America or you may have to pay duty on them when you get back. If the countries do allow more than one camera — and if you are serious about your photography, take one camera for color and one for black and white, and alternate them. You can even do your own developing en route with equipment which you can carry in an airlines bag. All camera stores have kits, the processing takes about 45 minutes, the instructions are easy to follow, and after the first time, you can develop film while you're writing home. THRU THE LENS TOURS "Thru the Lens Tours" are unique in the world. of travel. Arranged by photographers to suit the specialized travel interests of camera fans, they search out the best in scenery and the utmost in "human interest." Itineraries are planned with photography as the primary consideration. For further information on "Lens - Tours" contact Travel Inc., located at 2700 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Bill Mason of Travel Inc.
