Gables Swimmer | When Anna Dives In Coaches Watch; They See a Champion

By BECKY DOYLE-QUINN Times Reporter (Picture on Page 8) In less than one year, Anna Shropshire has become a better swimmer than most children do in a lifetime. Anna, a cute, 12 year-old towhead with big brown eyes, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Shropshire, 6745 S.W. 59th St. Although Anna does not live in Coral Gables, she is a member of the Coral Gables Swimming Association and all those hours working out are spent at Venetian Pool. She started swimming last summer under the guidance of Tom Baker, who is now Age Grouping Chairman and Handicapper for the Florida Gold Coast division of the Amateur Athletic Union. Anna dived in quickly and deeply. She had been swimming under Baker less than a month when she entered the Junior Olympic Competition here. She came up with a third place in the backstroke competition and in a relay, swimming against other children her age who had been swimming much longer than she had. Later that same month she won a first place in the relay race at the Dade competition at Curtis Park. She has over two dozen ribbons, trophies and medals to show for her year's work. Just how much work has she done? Almost all year, Anna has been practicing two to four hours a day, six days a week. Anna isn't the only swimmer in the Shropshire family. Four out of eight of the children have been swimming competitively. They are Susan, 13; Anna; Douglas, nine; and Natalie seven. Denise, 4, and Patricia 16, have been swimming in the family pool since they were two or three. Donald, not yet two, is in the process of learning now. But three month-old David thus far has restricted his swimming to the bath tub. What started as a part-time summer activity has kept the entire Shropshire family hopping all year. Out - of town meets, even local meets, are a family project. If the parents attend, as they usually do, they're put to work. Timing, judging and the like keep them busy, and tan. Speaking of tans, Anna is a pretty good example. Her nose is shiny and sometimes peels. A few freckles are evident, too. And her hairdresser isn't the only one who knows for sure—you can tell at a glance that her hair and eyebrows are bleached from the time she spends under Mr. Sunshine. Anna is in the seventh grade at Epiphany School. She's not sure yet whether she will attend public or parochial high school but that will partly depend on how much she will want to participate on a high school swimming team. Right now the thing uppermost in her mind is the Junior Olympic competition finishing this weekend. She's determined to do the very best she can to bring home a few trophies. She's entered in every event she legally can. Her former coach, Tom Baker, feels "she has the makings of a real champ. "She'll be great if she just keeps working."
