ART TIMES
By Robert S. Hurwitz Three weeks ago this column asked for an expression of interest from people interested in forming a monthly art discussion group. With cultural interest in Miami being rather limited, I wasn't sure whether any replies would come in . . . but come in they did, from doctors, lawyers, housewives, artists and just people looking for a change. To say the least, I'm surprised, to say the most, I'm encouraged. From the sound of the replies, it appears that we are not as asleep or decayed culturally as the majority thinks. This program will be dedicated to informality, fun, meeting everyone personally and learning about art from discussion. Don't be scared by numbers. We'll have a small enough group so that each of you who comes will have equal opportunity to talk or listen. Several letters stated apologetically: I don't know anything, but I'd like to learn; is it all right if I attend? The answer is: We're all beginners in understanding of any kind and, yes, attend. It will be a great delight to meet and greet you at this first mixing of humanity. Here're the details - - - Date: Tuesday, Aug. 8. Place: Rocky Graziani Restaurant 2471 S.W. 32nd Ave. Time: 8:30 p.m. Dress: Informal.
IT WAS A HOT day at the Coral Gables Public Library and two-year-old Mary wanted a drink. Her mom, Mrs. R. G. Loeb, 5810 SW 13th St., who's expecting a playmate for Mary, was very careful. She propped her little girl up on her knee, proving a mother's love will find a way. (Photo by Raymond Lang).
OFF BEAT By MAURICE LABELLE
Next time you get the urge to call us to bawl us out because your tea didn't get in the paper, please note what happened to Police Chief William Kimbrough last week. The chief tells how he had scanned the paper to find a story close to his heart and failed to see it. He was just about to call & ask us how come before he gave us the what for. Then he decided he'd better double check. -ml- Friends visiting us from the Golden Bear state and returning by way of San Antonio missed a nice opportunity to go back to Canoga Park with exciting travel tales. Alan and Irene Canfield changed their minds about taking the Dallas flight, which for the first time included a stop in Fidelismo's Havana at no extra cost. Better watch what I say-old Fidel may decide to hijack another plane some day. And I might be on it. -ml- Finance Director Ken Allyn is an unusual type of public official. I have never known Allyn to back down on a statement, however embarrassing, in print. And his willingness to admit an occasional mistake - in public - is practically unheard of. Allyn's alibi ability must be very low. Which is another way of saying that he has an affinity for the admitting and telling the truth, however painful. -ml- Joe Mantinan, administrative assistant to the city manager, tells an interesting anecdote about his problems in staging the 151st anniversary of Colombian independence at Cartagena Plaza, but he made me put my pencil down and I can't tell you about it. While I swore on a stack of Bibles I wouldn't tell, he swore. Mantinan probably hears more gripes in a day than the average husband gets from his wife in a year. He's one of the coolest Latins I've known. -ml- W. L. Dwyer, assistant zoning administrator, isn't getting as much sun these days. Dwyer used to cook long hours under king sol as a life-guard along county beaches.

Sages Of The Ages
A good book is the precious life-blood of a master-spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond - John Milton. I would have been glad to have lived under my woodside, and to have kept a flock of sheep, rather to have undertaken this government - Oliver Cromwell.

THE MAILBOX
EDITOR: Coral Gables has some of the best schools and finest homes in the country. Then can someone explain to me the prevalence of hitch-hiking in this area? This is not just a traffic hazard; it can and does lead to all sorts of crimes and vioce. And the whole thing is so cheap and ugly. Also, take a look in the rest rooms of our beautiful bus station that is used so much by our school children. Never, even in the public rest rooms of little hick towns, have I seen walls so defiled and the rooms so untidy! I find these matters difficult to comprehend in Coral Gables, "The City Beautiful!" Well Earned
The City Commission set a new record for lengthy meetings Tuesday at its last session before vacation. The meeting, which began at 3:15 p.m., ended at 8:30 p.m., with only a five-minute break at 7 o'clock. Odds and ends were wrapped up so the commissioners could start their six weeks' vacation with clear consciences. The next meeting is scheduled Sept. 12. But, if it is necessary, they will hold an emergency session, tentatively set for the third week of August.
ATTENTION! ORCHID GROWERS
Adv. Orchids should not be left outside during a hurricane. Take them into the garage, work-shop or some other sheltered place. If this is not possible, lay them on their side and cover them with wire such as screen, chicken wire or fish net. Fasten covering solidly to the ground. If you live near salt water and must leave your orchids outside, rinse them off as soon as possible after the storm and then allow them to dry for a few days, also rinse covering or shade trees. This applies even if you live as far as 10 miles from the Bay. Brant Orchid Supply will repot them for you if needed and we also keep Orchid supplies at all times. 2970 S.W. 27th Ave., Ph. HI 3-5544
