WISE WORDS
Moderation is the silken string running through the pearl chain of all virtues. — Joseph Hall, Bishop of Norwich. Sir Henry Wooton used to say that critics are like brushers of noblemen's clothes. — Francis Bacon. Much reading is an oppres- sion of the mind, and extin- guishes the natural candle, which is the reason of so many senseless scholars in the world — William Penn.

Sister City Anniversary It Only Takes a Handful When There's a Heartful
The first anniversary of a Coral Gables-supplied outpost in the war for men's minds in South America was celebrated this month by the English language library in Centro Colombo Americano of Cartagena, Colombia. The library was founded a year ago with a handful of books. Today, with the help of the People-to-People Program of Coral Gables, the library boasts more than a thousand volumes covering a wide range of subjects from children's stories to electrical engineering (all in English). In addition, it has 16 mm films, slides, tapes, records, magazines and literature about the United States. All these are at the disposal of the members of the center and are available to the public. Centro Colombo Americano and its library was established by our State Department at the request of the Coral Gables People-to-People group, soon after a sister-city affiliation with Cartagena was formed. It is the only place in this Colombian city of 200,000 people where information about the United States can be obtained. Besides maintaining a library, there is a staff of nine teachers who teach a total of 89 hours of English weekly. Once a week the Centro sends a projectionist to various sections of the city to show films about the United States. There is also a weekly radio program, titled "Neighbors of the North," which presents a half hour of American classical and popular music. The State Department pays the salary of the center's director, Dr. Ray F. Broussard of Lafayette, La., but all the books and other materials have been donated by the People-to-People Program of Coral Gables, the United States Information Service and residents of Cartagena.
