Coral Gables THE TIMES

'Too Much Beef, Not Enough Chicken'

What's in a name? "Choir director," for example. Mrs. Helen White has been one since 1951 at the First Methodist Church of Coral Gables, 536 Coral Way. Does she just rehearse the Men's Choir and Sanctuary Choir and call it a day? No. Much of her work does not even involve rehearsing the choirs. "Seventy five per cent of my time is spent on research," she said. The Rev. Dr. John Howard Hanger tapes his sermon topics for the year and puts them on Mrs. White's desk. Then her work begins. Poring over thousands of pieces of music in her files, she must "coordinate and blend the proper music with the sermons." "After I hear the sermon topic, it is up to me to read the Scriptures in the Bible. "Then I start thinking. I try to project myself into the pew, trying to realize what would be the best music for the person in the church. "You have to think, 'What is the message of the sermon? How did it reach the listener?' " Mrs. White said she must choose music that does not "just leave the people cold - feeling nothing." And she must continually add new music to the choir's repertoire. "It's like food," she said, "living on beef all the time. You'd want chicken." Taking the raw talent of the doctors, attorneys, carpenters and housewives who make up the choir and asking them to produce beautiful music is not any easy task. "But they're all people who want to sing," Mrs. White explained. She referred to the Men's Choir, "They're all businessmen. "All men who like to sing. And they come out early Sunday morning to rehearse. That to me is the rewarding part! "That these men - who have many important things to do - will do this." Mrs. White's job is not a 9-5 job, she said. Besides rehearsing the Men's Choir Sunday mornings, she prepares the Sanctuary Choir Thursday nights. If a member misses a rehearsal, Mrs. White will arrange time to go over the music. Often, a member of a small church, new in the area, will call Mrs. White, asking for help in developing a choir. Mrs. White is ready with a helping hand. A long way from the little girl of 14 who proudly played the piano during Sunday services in her small church in Cutztown, Pa. MRS. HELEN WHITE
