Gablegrams

by helen reynolds society editor One hundred guests were invited by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dolinger, 340 Candia Ave., to a cocktail party held Sunday evening in the Florida Room of the Miami Springs Villas. Occasion? the announcement of the engagement of their daughter, Myrna, to Lawrence Wheatman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Wheatman of 3490 SW 9th Ter. A next-June wedding is planned by the couple. The groom-elect graduates in June from the University of Miami's School of Medicine. MYRNA They met when they were students at Ponce de Leon Junior High School and now their engagement is announced. But Joan Anne McLaughlin, and Walter Conrad Lund, lost track of one another three years ago when their parents moved to Philadelphia. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hibbs McLaughlin, Joan's parents are announcing the engagement today. JOAN The groom-elect springs from the pioneer Miami family of Combs. He is the grand-son of Mrs. Walter Hughes Combs Sr., of NE 20th Terrace, Miami. He is the son of Mrs. Lorena Combs Lund, of 325 Aledo Ave., and Odvar Cornelius Lund Sr., of Hollywood. The wedding is planned for October 21 and will take place at the Coral Gables First Methodist Church. GUY B. BAILEY of 8751 Arvida Lane Gables is the first president of the new Country Club of Miami, now under construction. Time was when the Miami Country Club, the first private club on the Miami River bank where the Jackson Memorial Hospital is now, was the center of attraction, and the only country club. Mrs. Bailey tells us the Palmetto Expressway will take you to the new plant on NE 67th St, in 20 minutes. The Baileys' and their seven youngsters never have left the Gables. When we first met Areca, she was Mrs. Babcock and lived on Granada Boulevard at Anastasia Avenue. Her children are Mary Areca and Charlotte Babcock, and young Edward V. Babcock III. Guy's children are Susan and Patricia Bailey; Guy B. Jr. and John Bailey.

No 'Little Funeral' For This Peppy Gal

MRS. HOFFMAN No 'Little Funeral' For This Peppy Gal "I'm going to have a little funeral and go to Florida." That's what Mrs. Minnie Hoffman said when she was gravely ill in 1949 in Philadelphia and had to resign from the Internal Revenue Service. She had been with the service since 1936. "My friends said if I want a big funeral, stay in Philadelphia, if you want a little funeral, go to Florida," Minnie said. She came to Florida. She got well. And Monday, she retired, at 68, after seven years with the Federal Housing Administration. Mrs. Hoffman lives at 438 Alcazar Ave. "I don't expect to retire," she said. "I expect to keep on. I'm going to do the things I want to do." This would include welfare and civic work. She's already given 4,000 volunteer hours to the Veteran's Hospital and started the Catholic chapel there. And politics. Minnie started the first Woman's Republican Club in Coral Gables in 1951. And music. She's a charter member of the Musician's Club of America. "So you know I haven't been sitting under the palms," she said, referring to her active life. So you aren't going to retire? "No!" she said forcefully. "This is just the beginning." MINNIE HOFFMAN
