WISE WORDS

To treat a poor wretch with a bottle of burgundy, and fill his snuff box, is like giving a pair of laced truffles to a man who has never had a shirt on his back. — Thomas Brown. Humility is a virtue all preach, none practice; and yet everybody is content to hear. —John Selden.

Fires Cost Less | Their Business is Lousy

Coral Gables had fewer fires and less damage, but it was one of the biggest years in the Fire Department's history, Chief Paul Matheson reports. Damage estimates dropped off from $77,331 to $61,181. Building fires from 121 to 106. "There were several outstanding accomplishments achieved by the Fire Department during fiscal 1960-61," said Matheson. "The addition of the new fire station with complete training facilities provides a vitally needed improvement in fire protection for the city," Matheson added. "The installation of the new fire-police emergency reporting system, which replaced the antiquated fire alarm system, was a major accomplishment and gives the city an outstanding communication system." While grass fires continued the downward trend as empty lots become less numerous, the emergency crew was busier than ever and vehicle and miscellaneous fires increased. The emergency crew answered 564 calls in the last fiscal year, compared to 459 the year before. And vehicle and miscellaneous fires jumped from 64 to 114, bringing the total number of responses from 799 to 998.

New City Map Has Index On Front, Bus Routes

A new City map which would include a considerable amount of information not now available in printed from is being planned by Gables Finance Director Ken Allyn. The map would be similar to the present Self-Guided Tour Map published by the Chamber of Commerce. However, Allyn says, it is not intended to replace that map. Allyn's map, which would be printed in the City's print shop, would place the street index on the face of the map to avoid having to turn the sheet over. The freed space on the backside he would fill with a municipal and general information. "I haven't figured it all out yet," says Allyn, "but we're thinking of including such things as what department to call for services, an organization chart of the city government, perhaps individual departmental budgets and the like." Allyn said he hoped the map could include an overlay of bus routes. He said the project is designed as a method to get more information about Coral Gables to its citizens. He plans to have the map accompany tax bills. The project ties in with a Chamber of Commerce drive, through the Civic Affairs Committee of which he is a member, to get more information about the Gables before the public.

Commission Defers Action On Recreation Land Fund

Consideration of a recommendation by the Recreation Advisory Board that the city establish a land acquisition fund for recreational purposes was postponed by the City Commission recently. The board voted on June 26 2-1 for the plan, proposed by Bernard B. Weksler, secretary. Voting with Weksler was William Charlton. Mrs. Dorothy Hoover voted against the proposal because she felt more was needed. William Kerdyk abstained and Chairman Charles Rogers did not vote. Mrs. Stanley Fosgate was absent from the meeting. Weksler proposed that the 1961-62 budget incorporate the land acquisition fund. Mayor Robert L. Searle said Tuesday that he plans to attend the July 17 meeting of the board after the commission noted that the recommendation had come from a short and split board.
