Child Nearly Drowns; Cop Gives Help
Little Debby Penney left the hospital yesterday and is happily playing at home today after nearly drowning at Matheson Hammock last Saturday. The 21⁄2-year-old is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Penney of 8901 SW 117th Ave. She was discharged from South Miami Hospital Wednesday. The family feels Debby may owe her life to a Metro policeman, Officer J. Ross, who gave her artificial respiration at Matheson Hammock and then accompanied her in the ambulance to the hospital. Pneumonia developed as a complication but that was cured this week. Debby and her family had gone to the beach for a picnic with a group of about 10 people.
ELVA SAYS By E. C.
Dr. and Mrs. B. E. Smyers, 1428 Alegriano Ave., were host and hostess at a benefit dinner party for the R.O.L.A. Reserve Officers Ladies Auxiliary last Friday evening. Proceeds are going towards the building fund, National Headquarters, Washington, D.C. A chat with Shook (Mrs. Smyers) is always stimulating. "What are you doing?" I asked. "Cleaning bureau drawers and ironing slip covers," she answered. "In this heat? Why don't you wait till fall?" I asked. "Don't forget, Bern's in the reserve. We're getting ready to go if and when we're called." "I just can't believe it will happen, especially, to you," I exclaimed. "You're just not whistlin' 'Dixie,'" she said characteristically. She went on to explain how the other reserve officers in the Gables felt about it. At this date I'm still trying to contact them. "Are you going to build a bomb shelter on your property?" I asked her. "Heck no, I won't be home when the bomb hits. I'll probably be 'totin' the blind people around," Shook said. ★ ★ ★ Virginia and Bill Ussery and the Ussery Jrs. are in Germany on a Mercedes tour. They have been promised a trip behind the Iron Curtain. ★ ★ ★ Bobby Reynolds has given his last bridge lesson at the Coral Gables Country Club for this series. The group met every Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. Even if you know all about bridge and have played for years before Bobby was born, he can teach you something new. I joined the class but dropped out to give me time to write. I noticed that several of my friends stuck with him to the end. I certainly will be afraid to play in my old foursome including, Mrs. John Thomson, 3416 Alhambra Cir., Mrs. A. L. Lancaster, 4116 Pinta Ct. and Mrs. C. A. Huskamp, 6125 Montgomery Dr. ★ ★ ★ Vangie Grant is going to a writers' conference at Georgetown University. When she comes home she and Bob and her son are going to Peru. ★ ★ ★ What four Coral Gables couples played poker in one private bedroom of the Inter-continental Hotel in San Juan? The private game was one of the highlights of the recent Coral Gables Country Club sponsored trip. Mabel Huskamp and Carol Edwards told glowing reports of the trip. "From the take off to the finish, it was just perfect. Every minute was expertly planned as Edna and Bob Yoxall usually plan things," Mabel said. The famed Darado Golf Course has a new policy. They do not permit women to play on Saturdays or Sundays. However, the Fort Golf Course have the sand greens which is new to most golf players. After a foursome puts, they must rake the sand smooth for the next foursome. The last day it rained, so four couples gave up the sightseeing and set up a private poker game in the Henderson's suite. "We played from 11 o'clock in the morning until 7 o'clock in the evening. The game was not too steep, just right to make it interesting," Mabel said. The poker players were: Ruth and James Henderson, 7890 Sunset Dr.; Arlene and Red Franklin, 5005 Orduna Dr.; Carol and Chip Edwards, 740 San Turce Ave.; and the Huskamps.
