An Arab, a Faith Healer, And An Inner Urge Sent Eric Away
By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter "One day, I was watching the post-mortem of an Old Negro. "As I looked at the wizened Negro," said Eric Dunlop sipping his coffee, "I thought, 'That's all we are — a cadaver! "'And if we want anything out of life, we've got to go after it. It's recognizing opportunity when it comes and jumping right in.'" The 36-year-old Dunlop is from Johannesburg, South Africa. Retired, he lives in a two-story, white home that sits like a pearl at 422 Minorca Ave. "What the hell is the matter with me? I'm living like a rabbit," Eric said he asked himself when he was 26 and a well-paid secretary for a mining-financial firm in Johannesburg. "I had a nice car, a nice apartment, but I was scuttling from one rabbit warren to another. Out of my apartment into my office and back into my apartment." Eric quit his job. Sailing from Beira, Mozambique, he moved up the African coast past Zanzibar to Port Said. It happened there. "There was an old Arab who stopped me... with a turban, white robe and flowing white beard," Dunlop continued. Dunlop didn't think it unusual for beggars to swarm over visitors. But this Arab took Dunlop aside and whis-pered: "You are journeying from the land of your birth to the land of your adoption. You will know only happiness." The man refused money. Dunlop proceeded on to London. It was winter and cold. To escape the cold, he stepped into a building. It turned out to be the Ministry of Employment. Eric says he got a well-paid job. His bosses were Prince Philip, Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother, he says. From 1954-57 at Guildhall, Dunlop organized state dinners and other functions for the City of London and Royal family. While in London, Dunlop and a friend went to see Benjamin, a faith-healer, during one of his meetings. "He was up on the rostrum, his head in his hands," said Dunlop. "And he raised his head — all I can remember are his eyes — and he pointed to me! "And he said, 'You received a message in Egypt. Do you remember the incident?'" Dunlop nodded. The faith-healer went on: "England is not the land of your adoption. To fulfill your destiny, you must cross the waters to the New World. Don't hesitate to go!" Shortly after, Dunlop came to the United States. He worked for a steel firm in Pittsburgh, then moved to Palm Beach where he ran a ceramics shop and then sold it, he says, for a nice profit. In January, he moved to Coral Gables. Keeping up his home, replete with elegant furniture, and tending his huge lawn consume much of his time. He is a widower. Dunlop said he's able to retire due to the money he's saved from past positions and the profit gained on sale of his ceramics shop. Has he found happiness? He put down his coffee cup. "Does anyone every really find happiness?" ERIC DUNLOP REFLECTED IN MIRROR
