Publix Seeks Site on Nervia Street
Publix Markets will build its first store in Coral Gables if it can smooth out kinks in the plans to suit the Zoning Board and City Commission. The market is planned for half of the block bordered by Yumuri Street, Monza Avenue, and Nervia St., behind the Howard Johnson's Restaurant on South Dixie Highway. In addition to the proposed market would be two small retail stores, one to house a drug store in connection with the market and the other to be rented. Joe Blanton, vice-president of Publix Supermarkets, appeared before the Zoning Board at a special meeting Monday to request a change of facing from Nervia Street, to Madruga Street. His request was denied on the basis of objections from property and homeowners in the area. In an appeal to the City Commission Tuesday, Blanton stated that a five foot wall would be constructed around the back of the market area to prevent it being a neighborhood eyesore. The commission upheld the Zoning Board decision but said that a permit would be issued if the plans are changed to comply with the property owners' complaints. The market would have to be redesigned or relocated on the lot. The resolution was passed that the Commission would grant the permit "as soon as a design that meets the requirements asked for on placing the building on said property". A motion to hold a public hearing to vacate an alley running the length of the lot and to reroute the exit from the 43 unit apartment house now under construction next to the market site was passed unanimously at first reading. The alley runs through the center of the planned market site. At present, the building will have to be relocated to satisfy the conditions set down by the board. Further action will not be taken until the company submits revised plans to this effect to the city manager. Publix will have competition from Food Fair, located a few blocks north in the University Shopping Center, and from Kwik Chek and Stevens, a few blocks to the south at the corner of Red Road and South Dixie.
