Gablegrams by helen reynolds society editor

Lt. Cmdr. John D. Knight and Mrs. Knight of 521 Zamora are looking forward to seeing thier son, George B. Knight, airman first class, of the Otis Air Force Base, Cape Cod, Mass. George is flying down with several officers from the base for a short vacation, and also to see the Navy game Friday night in the Orange Bowl. * * * There were some 150 women bridge players Thursday playing in foursomes in the patio dining room of the Coral Gables Country Club. It was a pretty sight, since the women, all members of the club, wore summer frocks and flowered hats, and one could hear a hat pin drop; it was that quiet. Mrs. John H. Wilson, 1522 Alegriano Ave., is bridge chairman; (this group plays once a month). She looked very smart in an orchid toned sheath with matching short jacket trimmed in sequins and a matching cloche. The prizes were note books in beige or gold plastic stamped "My Secretary" and match the wallets given last month as prizes. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Stern, 334 Alesio Ave., took the month of September for their vacation and got a bang out of their week's stay in Washington, D.C. Of course there is so much to do and see in the nation's capital. They visited Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Institute and the Congressional library. They visited Gettysburg, and saw the now famous Eisenhower farm. They visited their son and family, the David Yaecks, in Philadelphia and their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. James Harris, in Indian River City. Mrs. Stern, born in Scotland, is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables. They told their Times carrier to save their papers for them so that they could catch up on the news. * * * * * * Mrs. Margaret Jacobson, who suffered a broken hip in mid-September, is progressing nicely in her apartment, 110 Merrick Way, she telephones: She is now up in a chair and has a remote control on her new television set, so that when friends drop in, and they do, she can cut it off instanter. * * * Mona Fondren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Courtney Fondren, 614 Altara Ave., has resumed her studies at Sophie Newcomb College, New Orleans, where she is a sophomore, and a member of the Newman Club.

They look like brothers; they are brothers. David E. Pettengill, aviation officer candidate, USN (left) gets his physical checkup from his brother, Dr. Howard Pettengill Jr., lieutenant in the US Navy stationed at the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville. David, a graduate of the University of Miami will spend 16 weeks attending Naval School of pre-flight at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola. The men are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Howard W. Pettengill, 2613 Cordova St.

PEOPLE

Bob Hildreth, the CG Federal public relations major domo, is back in circulation again after a bout with the mumps. He thought he'd gotten over them in the Navy nearly 20 years ago. That is, he thought so until he looked in the mirror on a recent morn. * * * Marine Aviation Cadet William L. Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Egon F. Schwarz, 7695 Almansa St., was graduated last month from the Naval School of Pre-Flight at Pensacola. He will now go to the Naval Auxiliary Air Station Saufley Field near Pensacola for further training.
