The Principal Uses an Oven Timer For Their Well-Done Education
By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter John Jameison, in his fifth week as principal of Coral Gables Elementary School, was sitting down to eat his lunch in his office when an alarm clock rang. "You see," he said, smiling as he rose, "That's my alarm clock to remind me to make the quarter of two announcements." He strode from the office, then stuck his head through the door. "Actually, it's an oven timer." This is typical of the casual, yet efficient manner of the crew-cut principal. Jameison, sporting a striped tie in green, purple and grey, would drape a leg over the arm rest of his chair or puff thoughtfully on a cigarette. It was a busy Monday and Jameison had to eat lunch in his office. Before he could start on the ham sandwich, broccoli and string beans, he popped up to attend to some business. He was back soon and talked about the last five weeks and what it's like to assume the all-important role of principal in a school of 800 pupils. He succeeded Mrs. Bertha Webb who retired last summer. "One morning last week a little boy, a little red-haired boy, came into the office and said his dog has followed him to school and could he take him home. "The dog was walking around in circles in the office and the boy said to me "He's scared." ' " Jameison became more serious, "I haven't had any difficulties," he said, "because I feel I've come home. I live in the Gables (1500 Ferdinand St.). "I play golf with some of our parents," he went on, sipping ice tea. "I've even sat at a Lions Club meeting with a first-grade parent on each side of me." And one recent Saturday when Jameison was taking his swings at the Granada Golf course, a pupil rushed up and said in a surprised voice, "What are you doing here?" Of course, there are more serious moments. Talking to PTA mothers about the upcoming carnival, moving pupils into less-crowded classrooms and conferring with parents who have just enrolled their children. But for Jameison, it's a pleasure. After all, his father, his uncle and his cousin have all been principals. And with his wife, Isabelle, a librarian at Dade Demonstration School, and his son, John H. Jr., at Florida State, school life plays a major role in the Jameison household. And for Jameison, who has wanted to teach as far back as high school, being principal of Coral Gables Elementary School is the answer to a dream. JOHN JAMEISON
