Says Gables Coach: 'They're After Our Hides'

By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter Coral Gables High football team, state champions in 1956 and 1958, faces one on its toughest years. Head Coach Nick Kotys didn't say this in so many words while his team practiced Monday afternoon for tonight's (Thursday's) encounter here with Jackson High of Jacksonville. He was more indirect. The Cavaliers, who have rolled up 70 victories against only 27 losses in the school's history since 1950 find their biggest problem is inexperience, Kotys said. INJURIES PROBLEM The second major obstacle is injuries, he continued. Of six halfbacks, three are injured. A third major problem is finding a replacement for Bruce Fischer, the Cavalier's top flight quarterback last year who pleasing coaches at Georgia Tech with his talent as their first string B team quarterback. The Cavaliers have three quarterbacks. Rob Hasencamp is injured. Larry Blume and John Warren have risen from the bench to try to fill this all-import slot. NO PREDICTION Kotys, looking back on the Cavaliers' 1-1-1 record so far this season, did not care to predict what lies ahead. With 40 letterman graduated and 35 other boys who were expected to turn out but who didn't for various reasons. Kotys weighed his words. He pointed out that the team lacks speed and makes costly errors, such as the fumbles and penalties in last week's 0-0 deadlock with North Miami. "In '56 and '58 we were state champions and last year we were city co-champions", (Miami High was the team who shared the honor) Kotys said. "So everyone is after our hide. Which is real nice."
