Fascell Gives Answers To Voters' Questions

What questions do Coral Gables business and professional leaders ask their United States Representative when he appears before their civic organization? Last Wednesday in the Coral Gables Country Club the Gables Lions put these questions to their Congressman, Dante B. Fascell: Lawyer Ed Russo: "What are the prospects for unification of our armed forces?" Fascell: "Very dim. I don't think we will ever have a single uniform or see the services under a single head." Banker Bill Swain: "How do you compare China and Russian Communism? Is China our ultimate problem?" Fascell: "In my opinion there is no difference between the Chinese or Russian-type Communism. Each one is as dangerous as the other." Dentist Bernie Smyers: "Did you see Liz Taylor?" Fascell: "I was in Rome at the time the press printed the story about us seeing Miss Taylor but I was at the American Embassy at the time of the incident." At this point the Congressman laughed as if he had answered the question many times before. Realtor Dana Woodman: "Do you advocate building bomb shelters?" Fascell: "Y e s. The only known protection against fallout radiation is a shelter." Someone asked, "What steps are being taken regarding the Cuban refugees in Dade County?" Fascell: "This problem is constantly under study by the Department of Health, Welfare and Education. We can't shut the door on people escaping from tyranny. "However, I have asked the department to indicate another port of entry, other than Miami, because of our total absorption here. "We've done more than our share in Dade County about a problem that's national in scope." Minister Lloyd Whyte: "Are you in favor of the Federal Governent leading the resettlement of the Cubans?" Fascell: "Definitely yes." Congressman Fascell, scheduled to speak before several groups in the Gables and other organizations in the district is reporting to his constituents concerning national affairs and the part Congress has in them.

We Please Mr. McNayr

Coral Gables' strong opposition to the McLeod Amendment in the Oct. 17 county-wide election went over big with Metro Manager Irving McNayr. The vote was nearly 2-1 against, giving Metro about half its vote advantage. "I was highly pleased with the vote in Coral Gables," said McNayr. Metro's administrative boss said he also appreciated the position taken by the Coral Gables City Commission in opposing the amendment.
