On West Ingraham Highway He'd Pay for More Road Bumps Not Less, He Tells City Hall

More opposition to the City Commission's street improvement program formed Tuesday when two dozen persons turned out to resist two proposed projects. One project passed, the other was deferred for further study. Approved was the rebuilding and resurfacing of Ponce de Leon Boulevard from Almeria to Malaga Avenues. Deferred was the resurfacing of Ingraham Highway and West Ingraham Terrace from Le Jeune Road east and north to the city limits. The latter touched off a lively and sometimes heated debate between James C. Hobbs II, 4384 Ingraham Hwy., and some of the commissioners. Hobbs said the estimated cost of $1.54 a front foot was too high, the improvement was not needed and would only create more traffic which homeowners did not want. "I'm willing to pay a little more for a bump in the road," Hobbs told the Commission. Commissioners, after hearing several more spokesmen for the opposition, decided to defer the matter for a few weeks until they can determine if the County will take over the road in its secondary system.

Donald Hoffman Is Named Country Club's Manager

Donald Hoffman, a former school teacher, has replaced Robert Yoxall as manager of the Coral Gables Country Club. Yoxall had been scheduled to leave April to take over as manager of the Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club, but departed earlier because of need for him there, Hoffman said. Hoffman, a University of Miami graduate and former schoolmate of Yoxall, had been working as his assistant for the past 11⁄2 years. "I just hope that we can keep things going as well as we have in the past," the 35-year-old Hoffman said. The Pittsburgh native has been a resident of Dade County since 1950 when he was graduated from UM with a BA in education. He taught school for nine years, most of it at West Miami Junior High School. During World War II, Hoffman served with the Army in the Philippines. He married a Coconut Grove girl, Peggy Brown. They have five children and live at 8281 SW 142nd St. Hoffman is a Civitan.
