DR. HUSTON & ATTENDANCE BOARD

No; That's the Problem Sunday School, Yes, But Church?

As Dr. Ralph B. Huston looked out over his congregation Sabbath mornings at South Miami Methodist Church he noticed something: Many of the people who'd come to Sunday School weren't in church. And Methodist ministers (and other denominations, too) all over have for years noted the same thing. Now through a statewide program — "United Witness" — the Methodists are trying to do something about church attendance. "We aren't going to actually crusade," said Dr. Huston, "merely bring the situation to light. However, members of the church do normally call on those members who have been absent." After a six weeks check, here's what Dr. Huston found: In the children's division (primary and juniors), only 26% stayed for church. In the Youth Division, it was 48%. In the Adult Division, it was 32%. For officers and teachers themselves, it was 55%. "I think this is a sorry record," the minister continued. "It's too bad when 68% of the adults pick up their children and leave when church services begin. "It indicates a failure on the part of the pastor to vitally reach his people. It represents a failure on the part of the Sunday School to make church-men. "And it reflects on the dedication of individuals who don't take their church seriously. "It's the natural product of fragmented and segmented programming." How about the people who come to church and don't go to Sunday School? Ah, said Dr. Huston, that's a problem, too.
