John Doughty, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Doughty, 1006 Capri St., a freshman student at East Mississippi Junior College Scooba, Miss., won first place in a vocabulary contest at the Phi Beta Lambda Convention held at "Ole Miss." * * * DOUGHTY Douglas R. Anderson, son of Dr. and Mrs. W. A. D. Anderson, 2701 Columbus Blvd., who will graduate with an M.D. degree at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo., will intern for a year at the University Hospital, Cleveland. Dr. Anderson graduated from the University of Miami in 1958. He is a member of the Phi Beta Pi medical social fraternity. * * * Miss Judy McCleskey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy K. McCleskey, 1210 Catalonia Ave., represented Barry College in the first annual Intercollegiate Association of Women Students event at the University of Florida. * * * Linda Howell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Howell, 825 Cremona Ave., made the Dean's List this past semester at the Florida State University School of Music. Linda is a music-education junior studying organ. * * * Mrs. Walter Gallup, 4401 Palmarito St., was hostess Tuesday for the annual tea honoring new members and new officers of the Coral Gables Hi Neighbor Club. * * * John R. McElwee, son of Mr. and Mrs. James F. McElwee, 57 Campina Court, a machinist mate third class, USN, is serving aboard the destroyer USS Stribling operating out of Mayport. His ship and another Navy ship participated in rescue operations recently some 100 miles off the coast of N.C. when they came to the aid of a Liberian tanker which had broken in two. * * * Midshipman Felix F. Karabasz, son of Dr. and Mrs. Victor S. Karabasz, 1232 Palermo Ave., recently participated in a four-day tour of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. with other personnel from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. The annual exchange visit involves members of the class of 1963. It is done to familiarize the underclassmen with the mission of the sister academy. Midshipman Karabasz' father is professor of management at the University of Miami. * * * Once a year, the Beaux Arts members hold a clothesline sale of paintings and the day is April 8 at the Joe and Emily Lowe Gallery on the UM campus. Admission is free. There will be pony rides, food, drink and snacks. Paintings will be on sale and selected white elephants. This annual afternoon affair is from noon to 6 p.m. * * * Past presidents of the Hi-Neighbor Club of Coral Gables were honored at the club's first tea, Tuesday, held at the home of Mrs. Walter Gallup, 4401 Palmarito St. The club, now in its third year was founded by Mrs. L. E. Huguelet, 234 Camilo Ave. * * * Mrs. Edward S. Christiansen, 6312 Riviera Dr., will be the hostess for the Coral Gables Chapter D.A.R. annual benefit coffee and book review at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Only fund raising event given by the group, Mrs. Ruth Kerdyk will review "Love Is Eternal," by Irving Stone. Mrs. John Montgomery is chairman. * * * Cadet Lt. Samuel William Fuller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel W. Fuller, 1325 Castile Ave., was awarded a letter (in basketball) in chapel ceremonies at the Marion Institute Junior College and Preparatory School Marion, Ala. Fuller is statistician for the team. * * * Miss Rosemary Kascher, a graduate of the University of Miami, and serving as a missionary in Nagasaki, Japan, will be a speaker at the 7:30 p.m. service Sunday at the Southwest Methodist Church. Miss Kascher teaches at the Kwassui Junior College for girls, in Nagasaki. * * * Kenneth H. Allyn, director of finance, City of Coral Gables, will be a speaker at the three-day conference of Florida's municipal officials meeting Sunday in Orlando.
