Gables' Ad Budget Shifts Emphasis to TV Approach

Promotional emphasis in the City's $33,000 advertising budget will be on TV with newspapers playing a secondary role, radio out. This was recommended by the City's Advertising Advisory Board, reversing a previous expression by the City Commission for emphasis on newspaper advertising. A typical proposed week would see the expenditure of $740 in the Miami Herald, $285 in the Miami News, $225 in the Coral Gables Times and The Guide, and $3,505 for television. For the entire program, the proposal is to spend $19,790 on TV and $13,206 for newspapers. Of the newspaper total the Herald is allocated $8,937; the News $1,425; the Coral Gables Times, $600 and The Guide, $200. Production and reserves account for the balance.

GEORGE RANALLO and Connie Bergersen are Hugh Barton and Florry Brown in the production "Look Homeward Angel" which opens next Wednesday night at Studio M Playhouse.

Biltmore Audit Is Still In Works, City Reports

(Editorial on page 4) The audit of Biltmore Golf Course operation is not yet completed, City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. said Tuesday. Robinson said he had received some figures from Internal Auditor Paul Gleman, but that details remain to be checked. On the audit will depend largely the basis for renewal of a three-year contract with Pro-Manager William Tinder. Tinder's contract expires Nov. 15. That contract was recently the subject of a series of articles in The Times showing how much the City makes — $4,480 — and Tinder's estimated gross income, $25,000 from operation of the 18-hole golf course. All actual figures were not available from either the City or Tinder.

Immunity Available To Fires

People who live in CBS houses should not be complacent about fires, Chief Paul Matheson said this week while making big plans for Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13. Those plans include opening the new Fire Station to the public for the whole week from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. While CBS-homes resist fire better than other materials, he said, the danger from combustion of internal contents is just as great. He pointed to two serious house fires during the past year to prove his point that CBS gives owners a false sense of security. The danger, he said, comes from toxic fumes caused from burning of today's modern home building and furnishing materials. Death often results from minor fires, Matheson said. Best way to prevent it; be careful.

Policemen Seeks Tilts For Team

Coral Gables policemen are looking for a little competition in softball. The idea is to keep in shape, Sgt. Carl Fieler, said this week. Local gendarms, and a sprinkling of firemen, belong to a out-of-league team that's crying for more play, Fieler indicated. Odd hours and the rigid scheduling of league teams makes it difficult if not impossible for the local police to join a league; Fieler pointed out. The group has got themselves approximately 10 sponsors, of which House of Montell is contributing a larger share. Other sponsors are Gables Typewriter Co., Piper Liquors, Miami Pro Football Bombers; Riviera Pharmacy, Jephson's Pharmacy, Sports Town, Moz-All, Paoletti's Restaurant and Corinne. Teammates are Fieler, Earl Callahan, Marty Ryan, Gene Bell, George Cody, Robert Dymond, Buddy Harris, E. M. Fulk, Jerry Lever, Clifton Smith. And Ralph Fieler, Bill Just, G. F. Rusk, John Stuart, Robert Mitchell and Kenneth Bush.

Dr. Mazow Writes Text On Contact Lens Use

DR. MAZOW ... publishes text Dr. Bernard Mazow, a Coral Gables optometrist who is internationally active in contact lens fitting, has written a text by request of the American Academy of Optometry. The book, containing what Dr. Mazow believes are the first color photographs of the human eye under the microscope, took two years to complete. It is the second of a series of post-graduate texts published by the Academy. Dr. Mazow's work, "Synopsis of Cornea Contact Lens Fitting for Optometrists," covers all proven methods of fitting contact lenses. Along with practicing optometry here and doing research, Dr. Mazow lectures around the country at various meetings and conventions of optometrists. The most recent of these lectures was last week in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he addressed the North Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Mazow, formerly of Houston, Texas, was an instructor in optometry at the University of Houston and was educated in optometry at Columbia University. He lives at
