Sewer Expansion Held Up Pending Slum Planning
Sanitary Sewer District Nine—twice proposed and twice deferred—may be delayed some more until a plan evolves for clearing the Negro slum area. But that plan apparently has made little progress since seven months ago when the City Commission launched a study on how to go about the job. City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. reported to the City Commission at Monday's Conference meeting that nothing had been done with the project lately. Robinson and City Attorney Ted Semple were looking into an ordinance to set up a housing authority to handle the slum clearance. Commissioners agreed Monday that it would be foolish to proceed with the Negro area sewer project now when the clearance plan might change the entire picture. The Commission is leaning toward a privately financed project, which Mayor Robert L. Searle says is also favored by some of the property owners. A tax-free municipal bond approach was discussed Monday, but nothing can be done until the slum or housing authority is created.
Advertising Push Starts Oct. 19
Some 38 Gables retail forms have joined in a new cooperative advertising program which will appear every other Friday beginning Oct. 19th. Probably, a page ad in The Miami Herald will be used. Mrs. Madeline McEldowney is chairman of the planning committee from the Retail Merchants Division. Each participant is required to pay a monthly fee and to remain in the program for at least six months. The cooperative advertising, built around a Gables theme and listing price on goods, is one of the local merchants' answers to increased shopping center competition. The Gables Chamber of Commerce has agreed to pay up to $1,000 to assist in defraying the art preparation expenses but none of the funds will go for the ad space itself. Merchant users pay that.
