For the Sidney Birchers Life's a Bowl of Cherries When You've 4-Pound Avocadoes Et Al
By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter There's no alarm clock in the Sidney Birchers' home at 2113 Red Rd. Yet they're up each morning at dawn. By 8:30 a.m., they're in the yard, working together. "I rake up the leaves and she cuts the grass," Sidney Bircher said. At 75, he sat relaxed in a living room easy chair. "And we have a good time," his wife, Margaret, said from her chair, a few feet from Sidney's. While she talked, her hook slipped in and out of the bright bits of cloth that were taking shape as a scatter-rug. The Birchers, who have been married since 1917, love nothing more than to work together and to see things grow. In their backyard, they've stalks heavy with bananas, branches bending from the weight of four-pound avocadoes. And there are peach, mango and guava trees, as well. And of course, Sidney's garden. "We've got some bush beans coming up," he said quietly, pointing from his window as the rain beat down. "We tried some pole beans, but we like bush beans better. "And there's some squash coming up ... see that other bed? And over there," Sidney went on, moving his finger along the rain-washed window, "I have some carrots and beets. "I put that screen over them because our neighbor's cat comes over and does her exercise over them." Sidney, born in Glouchester, England, said he cooks the vegetables. "She gets working and forgets about mealtime. She gets on those rugs." He began his garden three years ago because he felt he could grow fresher vegetables than he could buy in the store. Coincidentally, Sidney's father raised vegetables for market in England. The Birchers take good advantage of their fruit trees. In their kitchen, about 50 jars of canned jelly and juice sit on several shelves. Labels bear exotic names such as Surinam cherry juice, guava plum juice, rose apple jelly and rose apple and surinam cherry jelly. The Birchers are also active in church. They attend Church of the Little Flower, where Sidney is a member of the Holy Name Society. Mrs. Bircher finds time to help needy children through the St. Joseph's Villa Auxiliary. Muscular Dystrophy's Split OK
Gables City Commissioners Tuesday reluctantly granted permission to Muscular Dystrophy Association sof America, Inc., to conduct a two-day fund raising drive Oct. 20-21. The vote was 4-1, with Mayor Robert L. Searle voting against the request. City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. recommended denial of the request to conduct door-to-door solicitations and was backed by the Solicitations Board. Reluctance to grant the per-mit came because the organi-zation is split into two factions. The other group is known as the Muscular Dystrophy Society of South Florida, Inc., and is a member of the United Fund. J. B. Roos, regional director for the national group, appeared before the Commission to make the request. The two groups split because of differences over allocation of local funds, he said. Commissioner Franklin Evans, in supporting Commissioner Joe Murphy's move to approve, advised the two groups to get together to save the public duplication in drives and effort.
