THAT SILVER was passed out last Friday at Tropical Park to "Might Fennec's" jockey, Jacinto Vasquez, for winning the Coral Gables Handicap (the track pays for the gift). Do Horses Receive Fan Mail? Sure, Just Ask 'Carry Back'

Ever wonder what kind of fan mail a famous horse gets? Maybe you're like Gables Rotarians and don't know that horses get mail. Last Friday at their CG Country Club meeting they heard all about million dollar winner "Carry Back" from owner Jack Price. Price read a number of letters which were sent to the horse. They fall into several categories: -HUMANE: "Why don't you retire this wonderful animal before some mishap befalls him. You've won enough money on this superb animal." -RAILBIRD TRAINERS: "You keep switching jockeys so much, it's a wonder 'Carry Back' will even run. Stay with one jockey." -KIDS: " 'Carry Back,' you're the most wonderful horse in all the world. I'll be with you in spirit in the winner's circle Saturday. Please run a good race for me." -WANTERS: "Dear Mr. Price: Here is $26. Please sell me 'Carry Back.' I know that I don't have much money now but I'll make payments to you every week as long as I live." Price read more than a dozen of the letters and telegrams. The horse receives about 50 a week, said his owner, and Mrs. Price seeks to answer all she can personally. More than 15,000 pictures of the horse have been given away. "Carry Back" has just been retired to stud at Ocala. Mail will reach him there, Price noted, even though it's only addressed Carry Back, U.S.A." Rotarian Jerry Dressel, himself a horse fancier and dairy herdsman, asked what the stud fee will be. Said Price: "The fee's $6,500 and we're booked through 1963." The horse, winner of the Kentucky Derby in 1961, was born at Ocala and is something of a personnage in those parts, said Price. It led, he said, to a toastmaster once saying: "Florida has many famous people who are parts of a horse but this is the first one we've had which is all horse." Price and "Carry Back" were part of a Tropical Race Track Day program for the Rotarians.

Cat Burglar Only Has One Life; He Loses It

One of Coral Gables long sought "cat burglars" drowned in a North Dade canal Dec. 11 after a police chase. Peter James Watkins, 37-year-old West Hollywood, Negro, and escaped convict, was found in a canal at NW 37th Avenue and the Dade County line by Metro police. He had been the subject of a chase by Metro police four days before his body was found. Watkins had abandoned his car near the scene of the drowning and fled on foot. According to Gables police, the fleet-footed Negro who often outran police cruisers during his many escapades, was believed responsible for more than 100 burglaries here and in the Miami area. When his body was found, he was wearing the same tell-tale footwear whose distinctive imprint became a familiar burglary calling card.

Stab Victim's Said to Be OK

A 37-year-old stab victim is reported in "good" condition at Doctors' Hospital. He is Harry George Schoeffler, 600 Santander Ave., who Coral Gables police say was stabbed by Mary Parks, same address, on Saturday night. They were described as friends. According to police Schoeffler was stabbed in the abdomen with an eight-inch kitchen knife after he reportedly slapped his assailant. No charges have been filed.
