They Started With Faith and 4 Girls, Now Boast 200

By JUNE GRAY Women's Editor Hundreds of area youth have had the opportunity to compete in athletics thanks to a childless couple who devote themselves to promoting competition among youngsters and teenagers. Vince and Mary Lally, who live at 8435 SW 45th St., head a group which founded the "Florida Athletic Club" in 1959 with hopes of producing someone to send to the Olympics. In 1960, they joined the American Athletic Union. Mrs. Lally said we got tired of hearing so many people say Florida does not produce great track stars like California since they both have good climate. TALENT HERE "We know we have the talent here," she said, "but it must be developed. Presently, we are looking for sponsors, because we do not have the necessary funds to send these youngsters to meets in other parts of the country. "But what we need most of all is a track field." They have been using the University of Miami's facilities, but when they resume practice in January, Moore Park will be used. The youngsters do not practice much during the winter because the schools have their own events, but many of the schools especially in the elementary, are registering the students in AAU, Mrs. Lally said two elementary schools have already registered 40 girls in AAU who will begin January training. 4-GIRL START The "Florida Athletic Club" began with four girls, and since 1960, the Lallys have registered more than 200 boys and girls with AAU. They have never sent anyone to the national AAU meet in Philadelphia because of lack of funds, but have their own championship meets once a month for which they give first, second, and third place medals. The entry fees which range from 50 cents to $1 keep the club going. Sixty-two-year-old Vince, who was 600-yard AAU champion during the 1920's, wants to help the youngsters here because of help he was given when he was young. His wife says he travelled all over the United States to meets and he has never forgotten it. While in California at a meet, he even had a part in a movie with Gloria Swanson and John Barrymore. A retired New York City fireman, Vince and Mary moved here seven and one-half years ago. The Lallys have been married what Mary terms a "lucky 13 years." TRACK IS THE love of the Vince and Mary Lally. Here, Mary looks at a statue of a bronze sprinter given her husband when he won a track meet in 1924.
