Goodbye to Jim; He Was 25 Pct. Of Gables Police Force in WW II

A man, described by Police Chief William Kimbrough as, "one of the best," will retire Dec. 31 after 25 years. He is Sgt. James Powers, 63, cited by the City Commission at Tuesday's meeting. The longtime officer, who will be retired as a lieutenant, was primarily responsible for the apprehension two years ago of two teenagers who cherry bombed a local synogogue while services were in progress. Powers also was largely responsible for the apprehension of a burglar who hit 101 homes before he was caught. In World War II, he was one of only four policemen left to guard the Gables. He was promoted to sergeant in 1945 when Chief Kimbrough returned from service after the war. Several months ago, Powers suffered an eye ailment which curbed his services. Powers and his wife, Arlena, and daughter Nancy, 17, live at 6051 SW 44th Ter. Nancy is a student at Coral Gables High School. SGT. JAMES POWERS . . . 25 Years
