Dropped In African Finds Us Confused, Amazing

By MAURICE LABELLE Guide Managing Editor Our politicians may fret over our rate of growth, but at least one African is amazed with it all. He is Chrys (Chrysotom) Lupindu, chief sub-editor and assistant editor of the Swahili language newspapers, Mwafrika (Africa) and Mwafrika Taifa Africa Nation) in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanganyika. Chrysotom, Greek for "golden mouth," visited our office Dec. 6 with Mrs. Richard Strain while on a local trip under the auspices on the U.S. State Department. STUDY OUR METHODS He is one of 14 journalists from eight foreign lands studying American journalism at U.S. colleges and universities and working with various newspapers. Lupindu, an affable, soft-spoken Mngoni (Angoni) African, speaks three languages - English, Swahili, and his own tribal Angoni, which is used among relatives and intimates whenever they gather. America amazes and confuses him. And the more he sees, the more confused he becomes, he said. HE'S FASCINATED The fantastic transformation of America from an agricultural nation into a giant industrial power in less than 200 years fascinates him. More so because Europe took much longer to reach the same end. And our own phenomenal growth in Florida over an even shorter span of time really impressed our visitor. Particularly impressive was the succession of cities huddled together along the South Florida Coast. His own nation, made up of only 30,000 Europeans, 130,000 Orientals and nearly 10 million Negroes, has few large communities and the population scattered through the coastal areas, plains and valleys. Lupindu, who came to our paper accompanied by his escort Mrs. Richard Strain, had been in Coral Gables just brief moments. Unlike many travelers, he did not yet claim to be an expert. But he did take notice of our landscape because our coconut palms, the Australian pines and hibiscus are abundant back in his native Tanganyika. CLIMATE WARM While the climate there is warm also, Lupindu pointed out, seasons are reversed from ours. "We have plenty of coconuts," said Lupindu. "We don't know what to do with them." He was interested in learning some of the uses we have put them to and processing methods. His country, until recently part of the shrinking British Empire, has made the transition peacefully and is struggling to remain friendly to all nations, said Lupindu. This is not easy to do, he pointed out. COMPLICATED RELATIONS For instance, he said, it is difficult not to incur the rath of the United Arab Republic by being friendly to Israel. Ironically, Lupindu pointed out that relationships between Tanganyika and the British government are the best. The British, he said, looked upon the American Peace Corps experiment with suspicion and sent in their own teachers to back them up. Lupindu had a very high opinion of the Corps and its accomplishments in his country. From here Lupindu was to return to his temporary home base at Indiana University from which he will return to his native land by way of London, Jan. 12. He made Africa seem close and friendly while he was here. Lupindu should have been a diplomat. CHRYS LUPINDA ... African editor

Recreation Scholarships Aided by JOB Proceeds

The Junior Orange Bowl football double-header, to be played at Central Stadium on Dec. 28, is more than a sporting event. It is also a means of raising money for the Scholarship Fund of the Fourth District, Florida Recreation Association. This Fund was established in 1960 for the purpose of assisting young people who possess desirable leadership qualities and who wish to prepare themselves for community service in the field of recreation. The recipients of scholarships are presently students at the University of Miami - Charles Hayes, Mabel Ortiz and Richard Feltmarch. Tickets are on sale at local recreation department offices: 50 cents for high school age and under, $1 for adults.
