Water Decision in South Miami Raises Hope of Rate Cut For All

(Continued from page 1) Consumer's is making enough money on its investment to permit customers to have cheaper minimum service, also. Ed Kellerman, vice president of Consumers, said this week the firm has not studied Judge Eaton's decision fully. There is the possibility of appeal, he said. He said his firm has had no rate increase in more than 10 years despite rising costs of operation. In the Gables meanwhile, City Commissioners have ordered their attorney to review the decision and recommend a course of action. That municipality's commission froze Consumer's rates in 1959 when the utility sought an increase of 17 per cent. And Metro set out to freeze the rates when it considered purchase of Consumer's affiliates in the General Waterworks system. That deal was abandoned after several complained that it represented an exhorbitatnt profit to the utility. South Miami's former city attorney, Hughlan Long, is the man who carried the case for that town. Said he of the decision by Judge Eaton: "I think it's a brand new law for the US as a whole. I'm real elated about the decision," he said, adding a word of criticism for the Gables and the county for failing to support the South Miami suit. Judge Eaton's decision was based partially on a Federal District Court ruling. This upholds the right of one state or district to control utility rates of a firm engaged in business in more than one state. Long directed the court's attention to this case.

This Tree Fools Birds

A tree from Celebes, the boerlagiodendron, has developed a curious way to insure pollination. It produces false fruits among its flowers. These fruits attract birds which peck at them and collect pollen on their feathers. Flying from tree to tree, these birds carry pollen from flower to flower, thus serving the same role as bees and wasps.

West of the City Limits

(Continued from Page 1) dance-1962 style. And it's a lot of fun. As for the Twist, I can only recommend it to people with a lot of stamina — no matter what there age is. For example, one local chiropractor is quoted as saying his business has increased manifold since the Twist came into being. There's no telling how long these new dance steps will last but have no doubt that they're definitely Twisting in Our Town nowaday * * * CURTAIN UP: It was good news for local playgoers when the Coconut Grove Playhouse opened last week. It was a hit-or-miss proposition until a few weeks ago whether enough backing could be rustled up to reopen the only legitimate theater in Our Town. But the Playhouse did reopen — and the current operators started out in the right direction. They honored season ticket holders sold by the former management and opened the winter season with a pleasant musical, "Take Me Along." It's a good show — excellently done. Next they are bringing in the Broadway musical success "Bye Bye Birdie." So, it looks like Miami will continue to have legit stage presentations. We only hope the theater gets the support from the local people it deserves. For the only way the theater can maintain itself in this or any other city is to get the support of the citizens. And a city of a million people needs a theater!
