Ex-Cop Awaits Sentence For Attempted Burglary

TIMES 2-23 FF Ex-cop awbmf An ex-cop turned robber is awaiting sentence on a charge of attempted burglary following entry of a guilty plea in Criminal Court last week. The former Gables police officer is John Richard Head, 25, of 11020 SW 43rd Ter., charged with a year-old attempted break at Howard Johnson's Restaurant, 1450 South Dixie Hwy. Head, according to Police Chief William Kimbrough, was dismissed from the Police Department by him for an unsatisfactory record Nov. 13, 1958. The former officer resumed working for a South Dixie gasoline station after his dismissal from the police force. Approximately a year ago, the south end of Coral Gables was hit by a series of breaks and the finger of suspicion pointed at Head, Kimbrough said. Various business establishments were kept under observation and one night Officers Charles W. Skalaski and Walter E. Stathers spotted Head attempting to break in Howard Johnson's. As they approached to make the arrest, Head threw his break-in tools in nearby bushes. The information and evidence were turned over to the State Attorney's office and charges filed by them. Head, for whom County Clerk Jimmie Reagan testified last week, blaming liquor for his troubles, is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Gene Williams Dec. 19.
